With regards to priests making money, this was covered fairly recently in the latest Podcast from Matt Pennington, but as a new priest, you are not going to be rich.
Now, you need to realise that Cardinal Wolsey was in a very specific situation of being head of the King's household as well as a priest, and you are standing in Anvil, where every person present is a well off person. Your 18 rings is a significant amount of spending money, but because everyone has at least that much, you're on parity with others, not above them (indeed, you are well below folk who are running businesses or have mines or forests, assuming they do not use the products to make magical items).
This is where groups come into play, with a group, you quickly have plenty of money pooled, and can start to leverage that.
To hold your own, you will need to start using your political leverage as a Synod member to attract sponsorship (clearly not bribery, no sir!) and to make it worth the time of folk to sponsor you, you will need to amass political clout. This is a long term plan, much as it took Wolsey many years to reach the position of trusted man at court before he could start skimming off the royal accounts.
Hope this helps!
