For the past couple years, as part of the player support network, we have been running an introductory brief on magic at empire. It takes place at 5PM in the Hall of Worlds tent (essentially, go to the sentinel gate, turn left and it’s the big tent near the circle of standing stones pictured). We aim to wrap up by around half past, so we have time for some informal chatting and to get in position for time in at 6. I run it with Martyn Sullivan and “Emmanuel Goldstein”, who have both been playing nefarious (in a good way) wizard characters at Empire since it began.
We do not spend a lot of time reiterating all the rules; we just emphasise the parts that will help you engage with the magical elements of the game.
Topics covered include:
- How to use your basic spells to engage with the game
- How to go about joining a coven
- How ritual magic works in detail, how to do it and why to do it
- Conclave - how it works, what it’s for, and most importantly, how to enjoy it
We then have a Q&A session to allow you to ask any questions to experienced players/staff, although we do not have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the rules and reserve the right to suggest your question is better directed at a referee!
While these briefs are often considered for new(er) players they are open to all players whatever your experience. Many people can’t make the intro to magic at their first event because it clashes with the second general New Player Brief of the day, but in that case consider coming your second event or later, as we have the opportunity to talk about the magic game in a much more detailed and nuanced way during this session and you might find it valuable.
Hope to see you there.
