Semmerholm joined the Empire late (in 52YE), but has always been at the forefront of Dawnish military concerns. It was from Semmerholm that the Dawnish planned their campaign against the burghers of pre-League Holberg, and .the people have long felt responsible for holding the borders against the savage tide of the Druj.

During the Autumn Equinox, the nobles of Dawn will compete in a Grand Tourney to win the right to name the Senator of Semmerholm for the coming year. Will it be the incumbent, Escalados de Carsenere ? Or will someone new represent the people of Semmerholm in the coming season?

The Grand Tourney takes place on Saturday, officially between midday and three - your egregore is likely to have all the details of where and when the debate and accompanying voting take place.

Any noble can take the field for the Grand Tourney. The Earl of the last noble house on the field chooses the Senator for Semmerholm. There are a couple of exceptions however - any House whose Earl has already named a Senator, or any House that was part of a victorious alliance cannot participate in the Grand Tourney while their chose Senator holds their seat. You can learn more about the exceptions here → https://www.profounddecisions.co.uk/empire-wiki/Dawn_leadership#Leading_a_territory

The victorious Earl can pick any Dawnish citizen they like to become Senator - they don’t need to be from Semmerholm and in theory even a yeoman could be named. Though in practice this never happens.

This is the Best Form Of Democracy in the Empire, if not the world, because it is glorious.

People who aren’t eligible to vote can still participate, but only to a point. Yeomen are allowed on the field only to remove the injured or offer emergency medical aid. Yet there are still opportunities to influence the outcomes. Nobles can be enchanted (or cursed for that matter), and may wield magic weapons and armour or make use of potions that can all be provided by interested yeomen, or nobles who are ineligible to fight directly

In Empire, Senators wield a great deal of power - but they are also ultimately responsible to the people of Dawn. In conjunction with the Senators for Weirwater and Astolat, they appoint the Dawnish generals and a number of other titles. They also represent Dawn to the other nations of the Empire in the Senate. .

You can learn more about Senators here → https://www.profounddecisions.co.uk/empire-wiki/Senator. You can also talk to your existing Senators (who you will find listed on this page → https://www.profounddecisions.co.uk/empire-wiki/Current_Imperial_titles and updated after every event), or to your egregore, or to Merlot of the Civil Service (Paul Wilder).

Very exciting. I am very glad to see large master posts being used to help raise awareness for these sorts of things.

It’ll be great to see Glorious, Dawnish Meritocracy in action
