Academy and the test

Hello, i will be attending E3 &4 for the first time and i will have my 13 year old brother with me for the first time also. He want to go on skirmishes and battles with me and so i believe he needs to pass the citizenship test to do so not being 16 yet. Trouble is he and myself don’t want to spend our entire weekend and tickets on attending the lessons to wait for the test which he will have no trouble passing as we have been doing our own research due to his high level of interest. Not to mention i will have to watch him as he attends and so my experience is basically non existent. These are my main concerns

My question is how fast can a student of the academy complete full citizenship can we just ask for the test so that he doesn’t have to spend his weekend learning things he has already researched and can go on skirmishes and join battles like he wanted?

Thanks in advance for any info and advice

Will your brother be 14 by E3? That is the minimum age for the test of arms

You don’t have to attend the academy to pass the test of citizenship, apart from for the test itself.

You could potentially sign him up on the Friday for a test the following day, so he could be a citizen by Saturday afternoon. However, the test of arms will be separate and I would recommend that he sign up for the cadet quest. How much LARP combat practice have you both done?

Hi thanks for the reply. we have done a good amount of practice combat and he is aware of the calls and safety procedure.i believe he will be 14 in a few months

Cool. The purpose of the citizenship test and test of arms are to check that a young person knows enough about the setting to be able to roleplay appropriately with adults, and fight safely.

Role-playing is about conversations, and there will be plenty to be had at the academy while you work towards your first Empire goal…getting him to full citizen status.

I assume you’ve discovered the Sun Chamber which will be particularly relevant to you if you aren’t yet 19.

I’m going to caution, as someone who engages in Empire combat:

  1. Big battles are getting larger and larger.

Fighting one-on-one is a VERY different kettle of fish than being in the midst of a skirmish, which is again VERY different to the main battles. Just because someone knows the calls/ideas around safety when a situation is calm does not always translate to having the knowledge of it when it’s chaotic. (This applies to both full citizens and younger citizens)

  1. Cadet and Sun Chamber skirmishes are probably going to be best bet (as Wake says above) for getting used to the differences in fighting 1-1 v fighting in groups

  2. Familiarise yourselves with the supervision rules, as 14 years old does mean that he can roam, but you’ll (if you are above 16) be expected to check in with each other every so often.
A test of citizenship just means you’re treated on the system as full citizens, so can vote, run for office, get tried as an full citizens, make money from a resource, etc

  1. If you’re both taking to main battle (assuming you’re both planning on playing in the same Nation), I know that the refs often prefer under 16s who are taking to field to be consistently by the side of the responsible adult during the fight.

There’s nearly 1.5K folks who do the big battle. I am not exaggerating when I say they can get chaotic, pressed, loud, and sometimes OC risky^. Be aware of this fact if you’re both planning on fighting.

(^- This may change with new site, but the old site had a patch of woodland that was frequently the site of the main battles that had a very bad reputation for destroying ankles and wrists)

  1. As Wake says above, the game is predominantly social heavy opposed to combat heavy.

There’s only two (well, play one, monster one) battles each event, skirmishes can get pretty packed, etc.

My advice is, genuinely, get to know the non-combat side of the game as closely as you do the combat side. There’s lots of good fun to be had out of armour and weaponry.

(And, if you want ‘close to action, prone to chaos, and will always natter,’ I strongly suggest poking the Anvil Hospital crowd. Best group of IC gossips and OC genuinely good beans.)

On the plus side, by the time E3 rolls around, I hope we’ll have taken the measure of the new site! I won’t miss the tree-stumps and rabbit holes.
