Hi! Newbie here, hoping to attend soon.
I’m thinking of a changeling character, but I can’t see any rules for what antlers should be made from.
I was thinking I’d 3D print them, is that allowed?
Thanks!
Hallo!
I’ve seen 3D printed antlers in field, as they’re a lighter way of getting fine detail on them without faffing around with the chemicals that resin has (on the smaller antlers)
I would be tempted to go the rules on antlers and horns are be sensible, make sure you don’t accidentally stab someone in the eye, and ensure that they’re durable to withstand a few knocks.
Thank you, that really helps!
I don’t believe there are any specific rules about what antlers, horns or other trappings can be made of, so let common sense rule!
Avoid spiky tips,
Use something that if it fails, does not fail in a way that would cause injury (e.g. glass would be a very poor choice, as would anything that might splinter).
Be aware of how your horns sit on/around your head and how that might interact with your surroundings - low tent doors, tree branches, other people’s eyes and faces…
Keep weight in mind and do try wearing them for a long period before you get to the field. Something that feels wearable for 10 minutes at home may be agony for 10 hours in a field.
Factor in your attachment method right from the start - nothing worse than designing a gorgeous set of antlers and then realising you have no way to get them to stay on your head short of surgical screws.
My own Cambion horns are made of papier-mache, heavily painted and varnished, on an alice band, and have held up really well with minimal maintenance.
Do also consider the weather. Despite best efforts your antlers are likely to get wet at some point, and certainly overnight on colder events everything gets a bit damp. They’ll also (hopefully) be exposed to full sunlight too, and pretty variable temperatures.
If you are making them it is probably worth saving templates etc in case they succumb to the Anvil weather machine, or just a low hanging guy rope!
Thank you! I’m planning to use a commercially available .stl file for my first pair (maybe they’ll evolve over time as I gain lineage), so reproduction won’t be a problem physically, though I might struggle to repaint replacements perfectly, hmm. Maybe I should make 2 pairs initially, just in case!
Thank you for the tip on wearing them at home, I’d not actually though about that!
