Armor, skills and weapons

Hello! I am new to LARP and Empire. I’ve just had an absolutely fantastic first event and I’m now working towards building my kit / character. I had a few questions to ask from people with more experience - there’s so much to learn.

  1. Do weapons from Epic Armoury usually pass weapons check? Are there any LARP manufacturers to steer clear of because they aren’t suitable for Empire?

  2. Almost everywhere I have seen smaller shields that you can use without a skill (<40cm diameter), there is no hand grip, just straps. Where can I find one that will be useable?

  3. Head hits. I’ve heard different things from different places. Some people have said that head hits don’t count. Others have said that heroic strikes to the head don’t count but do take off 1 hit. On the Empire wiki in the combat section, it doesn’t seem to mention the head at all. Please could I ask for some clarity on this?

  4. Does a steel gorget on the upper chest count as chest armour for the purpose of getting Dreadnought?

  5. If you are wearing mage armor and it is made of steel, can you benefit from Dreadnought?

  6. If it is raining heavily, what is the general feeling about people using modern unbrellas when walking around Anvil?

Glad you enjoyed your first event!

  1. No way to know until the item is in the hands of the weapons checkers, but injection-molded swords can be on the harder (and failing) side.

  2. Many of the traders who come to Empire sell bucklers. I bought mine from Eldritch or Having a Larp, I can’t remember which.

  3. A head hit inflicts 1 point of damage, but don’t aim for them.

  4. I believe Dreadnought requires the majority of your armour to be metal, not a piece of it.

  5. No

  6. As with most kit, as long as it’s not a garish Hello-Kitty branded umbrella (or similar) it should be ok, but most people just wear cloaks and hoods.

Thank you! Very clear answers.

Welcome to Anvil! I’d personally suggest you get yourself a weapon from one of the traders at the event. That way you can make sure it fits your kit style, is balanced properly and is comfortable to hold and swing. Plus you could take it back if it immediately fails a weapons check. There’s plenty of choice so you will almost certainly find what you want.
