Best Realm of Magic for solo play

Hey all

So a slightly weird question. A friend of mine is going to be coming along for the first time this event and is going to go full on into the ritual magic game.

And they are wondering which realm is best is you are going it alone for a few events. which Realm has in demand rituals you can cast by yourself.

They do intend to do the coven game as well, but want to settle in and wander around for a while first.

Any advice much appreciated.

Most realms have enough low-magnitude rituals to play a solo mage. My advice would be ask them what area of the game they want to touch?

Spring is great for battlefield healers
Summer is good for buffing warriors
Autumn is good for buffing artisans
Winter is good for buffing warriors, farms and herb gardens
Night is good for mysteries and artisans
Day is good for investigations and warriors

So numbers wise (partly this is me thinking out loud) they can get Lore 3 as a starting character and then it’s four events of XP to get to Lore 4. So wack them in the Regio and they’ll be able to cast Rank 4 rituals.

One question to ask is do they fancy going to battle or on any skirmishes at all as some realms have low level spells which can make a magician more useful and some don’t. Spring, Winter and to a lesser extent Summer are useful for that. Although there are rituals just out of reach for a solo mage that are even more helpful there.

I think of Night as the best Realm for solo play, because the low-mag rituals are mostly relatively unique effects that work fine at their lowest scale. Contrasting it with the other realm I’m knowledgeable about, Spring, there are healing rituals that a solo ritualist can cast, but they’re not a very efficient way to spend crystal mana when other sources of healing are available, and shine better when you can hit a high mag and heal a lot of targets at once.

If you’re willing to source a +1 (i.e. waiting for use of the Regio) then Spring does have some 8 Magnitude rituals that a solo caster can get some mileage out of, but I think Night also has some rewarding stuff at that magnitude while also having more options at lower mag.

All the other realms, I don’t really know anything about, so that’s the extent of my two cents.

I’d use your Mage, if he was NIGHT, they can perform a ritual to hide the contents of your pouch AKA - “Night Pouch” - Effects - This spell enchants a suitable bag or pouch so that it cannot be opened by anyone except the caster.

 Sneeky time!

I love solo Spring mage, though admittedly i do have a chunk of xp behind me  But even a starting character can do impressive battlefield heals and buff raiding MUs in the regio.

I had a bad time as a solo/small coven night ritualist though that was admittedly a variety of problems, not just the lore itself.

The Autumn Realm has some really good interactional rituals, like Call Winged Messenger, which lets you message a NPC during Downtime, which is really useful for engaging in plot, and making connections as many important characters will need it cast for them. Also, autumn is really good for the coven game.

Other good rituals include:

Scales Of Ephsis
Mantle of the Golden Orator (Officially the best congregation buff)
Mark of Ownership
