During the last event, I was told two different things by two different Refs, and I wanted to check on what the actual answer is from the PD Ref team.
One person told me that Chainmail (or however you want to categorise it) is Medium/Heavy depending upon it’s weave.
Another ref told me that as long as it isn’t Aluminium, it counts as being Heavy.
Now this is a little confusing to me. I know that there are several different categories of Chain/Chainmail/Ringmail/whatever, and to be honest, unless you’re a History buff/Re-enactor, it’s not so easy for people to identify the differences between the types.
I was told by the second ref that the rules had been changed to the pure Metal/Non-Metal ruling to make things easier for people to be able to distinguish from Medium and Heavy armour.
Can someone from the Ref team please clarify this please?
The only official place for refs to answer queries like this is in response to emails to empire.rules@profounddecisions.co.uk - any answer on the forums would be unofficial unless clarified from that address.
As I understand it, and please email empire.rules@ as directed for a proper clarification.
Armour counts as heavy if it is full weight steel or similar/equivalent.
In the case of mail, this means the following are all medium:
[ul]]Aluminium or titanium mail/:m]
]Super-light steel mail, such as butcher’s mail or ringmesh/:m][/ul]
In addition, open-weave armours aren’t heavy. My ballpark guideline there is ‘can you stick a finger through it’, but another good guideline is that if it’s not a normal 4:1 weave, or denser, it’s probably medium.
The exact rules are here: profounddecisions.co.uk/empi … ium_Armour and on the section below: “Mail with an open weave counts as medium armour”.
Here is a decent picture of medium mail: willsegerman.com/images/ringmail.jpg
The plate in the centre is heavy (as long as it’s at least 1mm thick), but the mail around it clearly has an open weave and is therefore medium.
I’d love to know what clarification you get on this if you do email- I’ve read the wiki and taken it to mean the way that tea has explained it.
Oh, also for clarity: I am a ref at this game. I also am not aware of us having changed the rules on mail armour in any way this past event - I don’t recall anything going out on the radio about it or the like. That’s not to say it’s impossible, there were times I was off-radio - but I’d be a bit surprised.
I sold a set of ‘chainmail’ I had due to it counting as medium even though it was heavier than most new chainmails, as it was the ringmail weave type
ringmail (medium)
chainmail (as long as its steel, heavy)

I don’t do these on here very often, but Tea has made it very easy for me, here we go.
This is correct, and these rules have not been changed since start of game:

Thank you for the clarification.
IIRC, I was told about the “change” whilst being briefed for Monster duty, as I often wear a (going off the descriptions/diagrams for #1 & #8 above) Ringmail shirt underneath the Orc armour (so effectively, I’m wearing two layers of Medium), which is kinda redundant now I think about it.
BTW, to help with clarifications, something like the above diagrams on the Wiki might be helpful. To my (untrained) eye, the chain I use isn’t “open” as it’s relatively small rings, but along the style of #1 & #8, and I probably couldn’t fit a pencil through, let alone my finger.
