I’d like a mage staff for use in next year’s battles. But I’m having trouble finding one I like, and I’m not sure what to ask for to commission one to be made from scratch. I’m here for ideas and inspiration, especially if someone has an idea they’d like to see implemented but weren’t wanting to do it themselves for some reason!
The character is Dawnish, so I was having a look at the [profounddecisions.co.uk/empire-wiki/Legendary_beasts](“Legendary Beasts”) page on the wiki. I quite like the idea of having the tip of the staff resemble a unicorn horn - ending in a spiral-carved bone where the spearhead would be. This would probably have the advantage of being able to be made stab-safe. But I also think this might look somehow silly, or not sufficiently distinct from a regular spear.
I’m also not sure about total length. I’m 5’8", and I tend to find 6’ spears are comfortable to use for me. Is it worth pushing for the full 7’ to be the maximum length for the weapon category though?
Re the second, no: you will almost always be more effective with a weapon that is the length you find comfortable and practical to use.
Re the first, I’ve seen some rather nice medium-fantasy mage staffs done by Saxon Violence and Skian Mhor. Both also have the advantage of being quite reliable, which is a detail some LRP traders aren’t very good at.
I know that I am 4 months late to this conversation, but anyway…
I got my Mage Staff crafted by Andy Rimmer (Offa Studio - can normally be found in Monster). I described what I wanted and he produced a fantastic piece of work (basically an old tree branch with a bees nest, and bees, on top). The price really depends on how elaborate you want it - mine costs me about £150 but there is no other staff like it.
I don’t use the staff on the field though, unless I am using purely defensive spells. I will normally fight with a Shield and Rod or Shield and Wand (made by Andy after I saw what the staff looked like)., but if you specify a thrust safe tip I don’t think that is going to be a problem.
Bad picture, unfortunately, but the staff is basically a tree branch with a hive of bees on top (complete with honey and bees inlaid on throughout the upper end of the staff). I’ll try and get a better picture for you in a couple of days as it is being stored in my daughters house.
Oh, and i have no idea how these photos are going to turn out in this forum!
