Directions to the new site, for future reference

I know we’re only a week after E4, but as I live nearby, I typed this up a while back for folks who might want to track it down and trace out the approach.

(Steeple Chase Farm, postcode CB24 8RG)

Of course, there are many methods of navigation, and you may be prefer to rely on the sat-nav/W3W/whatever, but I for one get nervous on the approach to somewhere new.

So for those who’d like them, and as a local, here are some directions for getting to the new site (Steeplechase Farm) by road. At the end of each line, go to the number direction. Yes, you’ve got a text adventure game for the last few miles…

==========

From the north and west, coming east along the A14. (1)
For those coming from the south, especially London, you’ll likely be heading up the M11. (2)
From the east, coming west on the A14. (3)

(1) Pay attention when approaching Cambridge, the road junction there is one where you get into a filter lane and seem to leave the A14 in order to stay on the A14. It’s the leftmost of four lanes, and filters you onto another dual carrigeway, the A14 heading east on the north side of Cambridge. (4)

(2) Drive up the M11 to junction 14. The Cambridge junctions are fairly close together, so stay alert. Junction 14 (for the A14 east) takes you off the motorway and into a tight loop to filter in to the A14 heading east, on the north side of Cambridge. (4)

(3) From the east, I advise coming off the A14 at junction 33, signed for Milton, Cambridge Science Park and the A10 to Ely. If you miss this turning, you can also leave at junction 32, signed for Histon and Impington. In both cases, it’ll be the third exit, heading right relative to your previous vector. For junction 33, go to (5). For Junction 32, go to (10).

(4) Heading east on the A14, I’d strongly suggest passing the first turning of junction 32 (signed for Histon and Impington), and driving a further 2km to junction 33, signed for Milton, Cambridge Science Park and the A10 to Ely. For junction 33, go to (5). For junction 32, go to (10). Either way, it’ll be the first exit, turning left relative to your previous vector.

(5) Huzzah, you’re on the A10 headed north, Cambridge at your back (Note that at that roundabout, junction 33, was a slip road for a large Tesco. That’s the nearest big supermarket to camp). Proceed north, passing the Park&Ride on your left after 200m and a turn off called Butt Lane. It’s no giant purple cock, but worth a grin. After another 200m, go past a turn off to Landbeach on the left. Yes, the site is on the other side of that village, but that’s not a good way to get there. (6)

(6) After another 1km, you will pass another turn off for Landbeach to the left, and Waterbeach to the right. Yes, there’s a soggy theme here, don’t worry about it. Continue another 1km, through some traffic lights and another road turning off right into Waterbeach. Look for signs (sandwich boards) on the left for a company called Emmaus, and a turn off to the left. (7)

(7) About 500m after those traffic lights, look for a short filter lane signed for Landbeach and Cottenham on the left. Take this turn, beware of the SHARP left turn needed here. (8)

(8) Drive down the smaller road past Emmaus on the left (this is a charity/second hand shop/housing complex. It has loads of interesting knick-knacks and a cafe, if you need it). Pass some holiday lodges on the right, and about 500m after you turned, look for a road off on the right, signed for Cottenham. Take this turn. (9)

(9) After about 1km driving along this road, look out for the turning into Steeplechase Farm on the right. At time of writing, actual entrance protocols are uncertain. But you’re here!

(10) Drive carefully through the large village of Histon, sticking to the main road. There are many turnings and traffic lights, but continue north to Cottenham. (11)

(11) In Cottenham village, pass the triangular village green on your left, and look out for a large pub called the Chequers, and the war memorial in front of it. You’ll want to turn right in front of the memorial, down Denmark Road. (12)

(12) This curves round to the right, changes name to Beach Road, and eventually heads south-east out of Cottenham. If you pass a long straight road called Long Drove on the left, you’re going the right way. Keep going. (13)

(13) About 600m after Long Drove, you will approach Steeplechase Farm on the left. At time of writing, actual entrance protocols are uncertain. But you’re here!
