Egregores, Changing Nations, and Imperial Orcs

I tried searching for this in the wiki and a bit here in the forums, but couldn’t find an answer. I haven’t played yet, but I’ve been reading a lot for the past month or so, and I see that one of the egregores’ powers is basically to act as an internal immigration system if you’re from another Nation but want to join another one, and that this is flavored in a subtle magic essentially compelling you to adopt the fashions and traditions of the desired Nation.

I’m curious as to how this would work for Imperial Orcs. If you’re an orc and want to join, say, Wintermark, would you just be an orc clad in Wintermark wear? Would the magic include changing your race? Would it just be impossible? The same questions as well regarding someone from Wintermark or another nation wanting to join the Imperial Orcs. Is the egregore nation-changing system tied to liao, in which case the system wouldn’t apply to orcs at all?

This isn’t to settle any conflict I have with any character I’ve made, it’s just a thought that occured to me a few days ago.

I’m not sure orcs can join other nations. It’s an interesting question though.

No, orcs are not capable of bonding to human egregores, nor are humans capable of bonding to orc egregores. All orcs in play must be part of the Imperial Orcs nation.

This is answered in this FAQ question

https://www.profounddecisions.co.uk/empire-wiki/Nations_FAQ#Can_Imperial_Orcs_change_nation.3F

And it’s a no. Orc’s can’t join another nation and humans can’t join the Orc nation. Also the magic of egregores isn’t tied to Liao, that’s something different.

Might be interesting to try and get an orc nation to join the empire as a separate nation to the imperial orcs though, would let orcs have choice.

That was tried. It did not go well, from my limited understanding.

Was that the lassambrians?

I think so? I just remember them not getting the virtues

I don’t believe there is any ic barrier to creating a second orc nation other than convincing a lot of foreign orcs and the Empire that it is a good idea. EDIT: it is possible that PD might limit a hypothetical new nation to npc only due to the complexities of implementing an 11th nation into the game.

Given we just signed a nice treaty with the Great Forest, that might go somewhere if you ignore all the definitely not descended from Montane briar folk.

When we got friendly with the lassambrians a couple years ago they wanted to join on the proviso they got territory straight away. They would have become an 11th NPC only nation. The groundwork is there, so its definitely possible.

From what I interpreted, the Hierro orcs got the Virtues just fine… it was why the Virtues meant they should join the Empire that was something of a sticking point. :stuck_out_tongue:

In the Wind of Fortune referring to the Hierro clan becoming a part of the Empire.

It should be noted however it also included this line:

(OOC Note: While the Lasambrians are requesting admission to the Empire as an eleventh nation, Profound Decisions will not be making them an available choice for player characters regardless of whether players choose to admit them or not. The Lasambrian orcs will remain non-player characters, and a former-Hierro is not currently available as an option as a background for an Imperial Orc character.)

Whilst I can’t speak for PD but I believe they would be reluctant to add a new playable Nation unless they were convinced they could do it’s brief full justice, the time to write it and there was a convincing niche in the game for it.

There’s a lot of interesting stuff that’s happened IC regarding Orcs and Humans, and when Orc and Humans try to live along side each other.

Something something Hearth magic.

It’s very deliberate that it can’t happen, no matter how hard players try. And they have tried hard.

Just a quick look on the wiki and winds of war, What has happened to the lassombrian orcs?

I can’t find a specific reference after this Wind of Fortune but I understand the Hierro Clan of Lasambrian’s went to fight the Jotun.

Thats where my trail ended. May need to talk to the MC and find the ambassador (if there is one) in uptime about what is happening and if they can help.

There is no Imperial ambassador to the lasambrians, so your best bet might be to hunt down the information from people who care most about what the lasambrians are up to (which would probably be Brass Coast people).

The Imperial Consul would also be a good bet, given that she has authority for all dealings with foreign nations that lack embassies.

The Lasambrians are not a foreign nation. Make of that what you will.

I believe some Lasambrians were in Redoubt working as foot soldiers for the grendel during their attack there.
