First Event Next Week!

Hi all,

I am finally attending my first Empire event next week and I am beyond excited, if also a little nervous. So today I would like to ask, what are your quick top tips for new folks like myself coming into the game?

I’ll restrain myself to a few…

  1. Find a few contacts in your nation before you go: Some folk you can look for and say hi and maybe sit round their fire of an evening (These forums or the relevant Facebook nation page are good for that). This will stop you feeling quite so rudderless and alone when you arrive.

  2. Chill. You don’t need to jump right in and start your long-term ambition to be a storied hero/villain/magician/whatever at your first event. Lots of people spend their first game basically sight-seeing, and that’s FINE! Heck, it’s probably a good idea!

  3. Get a small, plain pocket notebook, and carry it in-character. Note down your characters name, nation, province of origin and a few notes on character skills. That’s all you need to know at the start, and you can use the notebook to record other stuff: interesting festivals, names of new friends, little maps to where that group is camped, prices of things, whatever. Consult it in play, it’s common.

  4. Find your Egregore (national magical mascot) and introduce yourself. Part of their job is to help get the new players engaged and happy.

  5. Talk to people! I advise reading a few of the Winds (of War or Fortune), on the Empire site or linked here. This is the equivalent of the national news and will give you a conversation starter: “Did you hear about/ do you know about/ what think you of…” Some would say you should “say yes to everything!” This can also get you involved in all manner of shenanigans, use with care :slight_smile:

  6. If you can, go to as many of the New Player Workshops as you can. They’re mostly on Friday afternoon before the game starts, and are full of stuff like this…

  7. As you’re jumping in on the winter event, pack more socks. :smiley:
