Hello,
I was reading the virtues part of the wiki. And as a new player that has not been to an event, everything i read fills me with dread that im missing something, could do something awesome, or will do something wrong at the event.
So, i had an idea on the premise of the wisdom virtue. Could my character make medical drawings, something similar to what was done in the 1800’s. Disections of enemy bodies to understand physiology, making notes upon human bodies etc etc.
Not sure what impact if any this would have in a rules sense. But it could be a good RP.
Is this possible? has it been done? would it be an IC/OC logistical nightmare?
Ill be playing a Kallevasi mystic healer
thanks

Absolutely medical drawings are very much a cool thing, you may find that The Anvil Hospital and School of Medicine. May have somethings to assist you or at least inspire you. Rules wise they don’t have any impact but cool phys reps and inspiration for cool roleplay are ends in and of themselves.
When it comes to medicine at Empire the term is ‘appropriate Roleplaying’ so as long as you can talk it through healing is healing. No one is going to yell at you for doing it wrong. If you’re worried about what to do keep an eye on the list of New Player Activities on Friday before time in, last time the hospital did a quick introduction to and workshop on medicine and medical roleplay.
Everyone was new once, even those of us who’ve been around for years, we all remember the worry of your first time. Just remember that everyone else is here to have a good time and want you to have a good time and you’ll be fine.
You might also find The Hospital’s Facebook group useful and I’m (and I’m sure others) are more than happy to answer any further questions you may have.

You’ll be fine. I don’t think there’s any issue with chopping up dead bodies for research purposes. Especially as a Kallevesi healer.
I haven’t seen any anatomy books in play, but given the amount of detail on some of the Hospital literature, they’re probably in setting somewhere.
No-one expects you as a new player to have memorised the wiki. Heck, if you can remember your characters name and nation and 1 or 2 things your interested in, that’ll be fine.
“I’m new to Anvil” is an IC flag for “help I’m a new player and may not understand what you were just on about…”
In a few weeks the Winds of War and the Winds of Fortune will come out. These are functionally the bug news stories. Pick one that your character would find interesting/relevant and use it as a subject for starting discussion
Thanks guys. Ill go try and source an appropriate looking book so i can draw and make notes.
There are definitely anatomy books in play - my partner in crime and I are playing medical students from the Diora University, and for much of our first year carried around a cheap old copy of Grey’s Anatomy which I’d rebound in scrap leather, so we could flip to a diagram of ‘what it’s supposed to look like’ when doing surgery.
Regards dead bodies, there’s some nations which have Things To Say About That (the Marches, for example) but learning from dead bodies is definitely a thing that happens, and the idea that ‘the flesh is temporary, and useless once the soul’s gone’ makes dissections much less problematic than they were in ‘the real world’ - we roleplayed that prior to Anvil we’d never worked on a living patient, only dissected corpses.
Entirely happy to talk about all these things both I and OOC, and looking forward to meeting another Anatomist in Anvil! I’m Marisa Alfero di Sarvos, the League rep for the Hospital for this year.
I will totally be IC and OOC interacting with you this event. Im RPing a draughir kalvassii mystic, full healer spec. Ill likely be on the field of battle too… probably.
Suppose i best get OOC researching medical science. HA!
Remember that ‘medical science’ covers a whole host of things in the Empire - models like the 4 humours, or the idea of illness being due to ‘a blockage in the flow of vital energy’. are just as valid as actual science

This. Absolutely.
My understanding is that in the Empire setting, things like that are actual science.

This thread might be useful: What and how much should I read up on?
the wiki is huge so (almost) no-one has read all of it, but that thread has advice on which bits are important to read before playing, depending on what sort of character you’re going to play.

Imperial medical science basically boils down to everything is true for the person doing it. ‘Appropriate roleplay’ is not just modern medicine. Occult vapours, healing rocks, Virtuous yoga and pressure points are all equally true.
the important thing is that it makes sense to your character and they can explain how it works.

As a note, the fact that you can use pretty much anything to heal people doesn’t mean that your character can’t decry everyone else’s methods as superstition and hokum, while their methods are honed to a fine razor point.

“What, you CUT PEOPLE to heal them? Savages! Not a crystal in sight!”
Speaking on an entirely personal level, I’d be delighted if someone came and asked the magistrates if they could have some cadavers for educational purposes.

For an anatomy session at the Academy?
You know, I suspect the Academy would absolutely love that, but the Hospital and interested private citizens could also potentially make a request.
Alternatively, the request could go the other way: any Terminal characters could request that their bodies be used for learning.
I am sooo up for this… So i meet you all at the hospital, yes?
