I’ve been thinking about something to create at home to bring and sell IC at an event. I had the idea of creating a ‘potion’ of sorts (it doesn’t affect a character in any way, it would just be a drink), but would this be allowed? Or would it conflict with the game mechanics when it comes to potions, tonics etc?
Selling drinks (for IC money) is allowed. Something like a quack remedy or folk medicine with no mechanical effect sounds interesting; I’m not sure how well it’d work out in play, running mostly off my gut feeling about attitudes - when there are potions we know do have immediate benefits, it might feel a bit harder to sell something without them. Also worth having a think about how to make clear that these aren’t mechanical potions in the early part of the sales pitch.
I think the way round that might be to angle it in the tasty-refreshing-beverage-with-claimed-health-benefits space - “Doctor Belissima’s Herbal Refreshment! A delicious blend made to a secret recipe! Cleanses the body*, sharpens the mind**, and delights the tongue!***”
“*cleansing guaranteed only for minor nonmagical ailments; **sharpens the mind when drinker is suffering dehydration; ***no actually this one’s entirely legit, this stuff’s delicious.”
This is all suggestion, though - your idea is interesting and not against the rules (the lack of potion cards or item ribbons will make pretty clear it’s not a mechanically-effective concoction), and I think this could be great!
You’re fine, this kind of mercantile game isn’t really my style. I just really enjoy thinking up characters and this sort of detail, whether for myself to play or to help someone else find their fun.
I’ve emailed PD before about this stuff and they warned to make sure people buying it know there would be no mechanical effect in the game, but seeing as almost anything with a mechanical effect has a lammy, ribbon, or card, you’re probably fine.
I have a friend who was selling knock-off talismans and a lot of players loved being IC scammed, when they could clearly tell OC that it was a knock-off.
That’s good to know @Kerrima thankyou, and kind of what I thought would be the answer they’d give. I’ll come up with an idea on how to show they have no effect without just coming straight out with it.
Love the knock off talisman idea, at the very least it gets some IC RP going for sure!
The best way to show they have no effect beyond a placebo is to avoid any kind of lammie or item that could be confused as a lammie and strictly no white ribbon or such that could be confused with a magic item. Possibly avoid the 6 herbs as well in descriptions? And if anyone asks ooc “what potion this is?” reply appropriately. In character espouse its cures for what ails you.
Sounds fun. My next character is going to be a Physick who treats everything with Special Sheep Liniment. No mechanical effect, but applying it counts towards 2 minutes RP to treat wounds.
I mean, there IS dye in there but it’s just a drop. I haven’t tested on material but I will do!
They’re actually drinkable as they are…I’m not sure if people would rather drink them or keep them though? The cork could always be glued down I suppose, to prevent Urizen stainage
A lesson learnt from years of LARPing. If you hand a potion to someone, there is a chance they will drink it. Even if it has bits floating in it. Even if it looks foul. Even if you’re fairly sure the top was wax-sealed into place.
There is always a chance that someone will try to drink it.
Which is why when i was handing round “True Vervain” as a healer, it was lemonade with green food colouring.
By the way, if you want to add glitter to something and not worry, the edible silver balls used as cake decorations dissolve in lemonade (and presumably other liquids), leaving a dash of sugar and some silver glitter, all perfectly edible.
Among other stupid things I have done, I have very nearly started chewing on a herb card when someone handed me the card and said ‘chew this’. I think I hallucinated that it was actually a herb.
Also PLV crew were mortified when I lifted a potion to my lips and tried to neck the thing during my vision - the physrep was full of tea leaves. (I adored the RP from that. But an important lesson was learned about immersive roleplaying and physreps that look like they are drinkable.)
I use these as my personal phys-reps for actual lammied potions, rather than needing to clean and refill them each event. If you were giving out non-lammied “potions” that are drinkable, I would consider an OC side to the label explaining what’s in it for allergy reasons or whatever.
I was able to pick up some lovely plaster bottles from Skhian Mohr(?) for £1/£1.50ea . They are very pretty with lots of different shapes and colours and a wax top/wood stopper. Some even have the imperial horse on.
Edit: ill take a couple of pics when I get home and show them.
