How many costumes?

So pretty simple question, how many costumes do you take to Empire?

I’m currently thinking 2, 1 more formal a military tunic with robes and then 1 for battle under tunic with leather Armour and cloak attached . Possibly going to have a thicker cloak for evening use. However is there something else I should take or might benefit from?

Depends what you class as costume. I carry 3-4 sets of base layer kit so I can change the sweat stained or damp things a little more than daily.

If you mean the outer bits that mark your character, I only have 1, but my wife has anywhere between 3 and 12 depending upon character (League ladies and their dresses…)

(Caveat: I play in Urizen, I don’t do battles.)

These days, I have:

  • one overrobe, which gets worn every day
  • three thinner undertunics, one for each day of the event
  • pairs of leggings for each day of the event
  • two pairs of thermals (top and trousers) if it looks like it might be cold, so I can change them between days)
  • a cloak

Basically, trying to strike a mix between a change of at least the layer of clothes next to the skin each day, and not having to carry multiple separate outfits.

(Also really helped when it was super hot last event and on the last day I just went for undertunic because two robes was too warm.)

Like @MicasStorm says, extra base layer is good idea as it gives you something to change into that isn’t battle kit should the weather be too warm or too wet.

For me, as a Varushkan woman, I take 2/3 shirts, a skirt, a pair of trousers, a cardigan for when it gets chilly in the evening and my mage cloak. Also do consider a couple of pairs of boots rather than just one if you have space - there is nothing more upsetting than discovering your boots have a hole in them on the first night of bad weather -_-

Spare shoes is a good point - if it’s halfway warm, I take hiking sandals as well as hiking boots. Even if I don’t end up wearing them IC, they can still be useful for, say, getting changed in the loos without having to deal with boot laces on the floor.

I aim to have at least two complete outfits: wear one Friday, one Saturday, whichever is driest/most presentable/smells best of the two on Sunday. Three is nice to have. If you’re looking to extend your wardrobe, start with an extra base layer, because clean fabric next to the skin a) feels nice and b) smells better  .

Seems you all seem to be a similar page to me, although a few things I had not given to much thought on. As for shoes I was intending just 1 pair of IC and 1 pair of emergency OC that could be used IC a decent pair of walking boots. But I do own a couple of pairs of seal socks which are amazing!!! Although can take a while to get used too.

What’s interesting here is how we reflect our characters through our wardrobe, I’m someone who can comfortably travel very minimally and still be comfortable yet some characters require more changes as @MicasStorm mentions his wife may need up to 12 dresses :fearful:, I assume that your wife’s character is a noble?

@Phoenix You’re getting Dawn mixed up with the League I think… never come across ‘nobles’ in the League. But the League is very heavy on ‘the right clothes for the right occasion’

Brass Coast here!
I have three shirts and three matching pairs of harem pants (Blue, Navy and Red), two tunics (red, yellow) two outer layers (long red waistcoat, long yellow short-sleeved thing) and a sleeveless tunic I wear for battle.

That gives me two full outfits and a battle outfit, plus enough that I can mix and match. At E2, I didn’t even get my tunics out, or the long red thing, and I still managed to wear something different each day.

Courtesy of SevenSecrets, I have for my character (Dawnish Noble):
3 shirts, white cotton
2 pairs fairly smart trousers
A wool long cote (knee length tunic, split at the front)
A linen-look one (for warm weather)
And assorted bling and underwear. Can never have too many socks.
Also a battle-dress incorporating all my armour and a heavy linen tabard, with some embroidery.

Monstering gear is generally a baggy shabby pair of dull green trousers, a couple of dull under-shirts, a thick baggy jersey (because waiting for the players gets cold, and then getting thumped by over-excited players calls for padding), and whatever orc-coloured* shirts I can cram in. Much of this also makes reasonable extra underlayers.

For cold nights, also a warm cloak and some thermal underwear.

Empire Orcs are colour-coded for your conveniance. Available in Thule Blue, Druj Green, Jotun Red, Lasambrian Orange, Grendel Purple and Imperial Brown.

Wintermarker here.
I have one set of battle kit - two old tunics to go over/under my mail
Two swanning round Anvil tunics and two heavier wool tunics.t
I also have a monster base layer and a few odds and sods of monster kit related to the EMU and because I’m a kit nerd.

I like being able to put something cleanish on after battles

My current Imperial Orc basically has one outfit - trousers, tunic, surcoat and hood.

My plan for my next character in Urizen will have… some number - it gets quite difficult to count when you’re mixing and matching layers, but I’m expecting to be able to do two pretty much distinct sets of non-battle kit (one sleeved, one sleeveless, option to mix and match between the two depending on exactly what level of warmth and look I want at any given time) plus a gambeson and armour for combat.

Faelan had three sets of kit, a number of shirts, a set of maille and a set of plate. He had two different belt kits and it was bloody hard work to bring it all. May not be bringing as much stuff anymore.

Im in the league. and at the moment, I have a 2x hose, 2 shirts. I also have a Highwayman’s coat, cloak, and then armour and such for battle.
I try to wear a t-shirt under my shirts (Although its was to warm last event). I do need to get an extra top layer shirt.

Hmm…

Regular day wear: One gold tunic, one sleeveless overcoat, one pair harem pants, one burnt orange cape, one tagelmust (although I do have a spare), scarves, pouch, bag. A million pieces of jewellery.
Battle wear: One under-maille tunic, one over-maille tunic (so the grease doesn’t get on the blinging outer layers, obvs) plus bits of the above depending on the weather and how I feel, belt for maille
Monster kit: black trousers, black t-shirt, gloves, orc mask, belt
Daily: Multiple sets of thermals and OOC t-shirts and leggings depending on the weather.

Summary: I only have one ‘look’ for Renata, but I try to have one OC layer underneath that can be changed each day. Especially if I’m fighting; only my over-layers go onto the battlefield, never my under-tunic. Otherwise I would never want to wear it again…

One basic costume at the moment but a few layers to swap and change as needed. I’m a Highguard Unconquered for reference.

1 Black sleveless overrobe with a hood.
1 Black tunic
3 Shirts to change as needed.
1 black pair of trousers
2 sets of base layers, trousers and top if it’s going to be chilly.
1 Long medieval pair of boots + 1 set of black combat boots with some leather gaiters, depending on conditions.

Thanks everyone for sharing, I find it rather fascinating to see what people bring with them, I’m very limited as I only a motorbike although I do frankly manage to carry an obscene about stuff on it! Be interesting to see how I pack everything for E4, assuming I can get the time off work :open_mouth:. I’m still not sure if I’m going to battle on y first event, depends on a few things but not sure my leather armor will be completed in time  but we shall see. If I do I need to look at monster kit too… Think I might need a side car :joy:

I am notorious for overpacking but I am trying to get better. For the last event I attended - E4 2016 - I packed the following for my non-combatant knight-errant character:

3 white shirts (one for each day of the event)
2 red tunics (one for the Saturday, one for the Friday night and the Sunday)
2 pairs of trousers (as above)
1 heraldic surcoat
1 chaperon
1 pair of leather boots

Which honestly is the least I can possibly imagine having with me. I also had a bag of chain armour, a shield, a buckler and two swords and another tunic for monstering And that’s not counting accessories - belts, pouches, physreps for artisan items…

And it all gets even worse when you get an IC tent and can’t stop yourself from getting carried away with set dressing…!

flags, pennants, IC lighting, chairs, carpets… E1 this year I found I’d accidently dressed my sleeping bag to look IC. It was unintentional, honest
