So I know Empire has influences from Game of Thrones, or at least PD compare aspects of the game to GoT. Obviously making your costume into a Cersei cosplay wouldn’t be appropriate.
With the new wiki pages for monster kit, I was looking at the Slaver’s Bay noble costumes (link, link) from the GoT show, and thinking “with some purple sashes, that would make a pretty cool Grendel Mage and possibly easy enough for me to make.” I was thinking of getting a white tunic style dress, and wrapping long purple sashes around similar to in the pictures, with some runed-up hoop/ring things to wrap into.
However, I wouldn’t want to somehow worry that it was infringing IP of costume design if I was going to do something similar. Then having to worry about use of photos that feature my monster kit? Should I email PD with a sketch first and see if they veto it? Am I overthinking it?
Taking inspiration from something is totally normal. A straight copy could be a bit jarring, because it would make you think of theOC reference rather than something that’s IC.
Exactly where that line is… well. That’s trickier.
If you were to take that style and do the sashes in purple I think that would be quite cool.
I wouldn’t worry too much about “infringing IP” as long as you take that costume as a starting point and fiddle with it. Add some looted jewelery possibly.
Do you have any ideas for some Mage Armour to layer on top of that?
The Grendel look and feel page doesn’t have a specific section on Mage Armour but it should offer some inspiration.
I don’t currently use Mage Armour for my actual character, I’m not sure I’m going to invest in Mage Armour just for monster kit. Though I might consider picking up like arm braces then only purchasing the full torso armour if I get an IC character that would use it.
Looking around at materials available to me (I am not too crafty, so I’m looking at mostly off the shelf things), I think finding some looted looking jewelry will help make the costume look it’s own.
Cool, do pop back and share a picture of it when it’s done
I certainly will!
As a side note, are the Runes used outside of the Empire, or are they Imperial runes? I was thinking of adding a few of the prosperity and vaguely nautical ones to the costume (Sular, Pallas, maybe Ophis). I don’t want them to look to out of place though. Otherwise I assume it would be fair game to make up some other symbology to adorn it with?
The Jotun use the same runes on their currency.
