Mage events in the field

I tell people I’m still fairly new to Anvil, I have attended 7 events now and my character is a battle mage but focuses on battle healing more than offensive attack.

I’m trying to figure out what is available to explore when not on the battle field. I am a member of silver chalice and attend those meetings but honestly feel like I’m just an observer with nothing to really input but other than that I don’t know what else is available.

I have of course been told about conclave but also been told about the meetings and honeslty I don’t think I could sit through it. But is there other areas to look at and explore outside of the battlefield?? Just looking to fill my time a bit better rather than just sitting around camp and maybe start to get a bit more involved (and maybe even start to understand lore better in order to participate better).

Sorry its all a bit vague but any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Advice that’s going to sound silly, but can help

  • Go for a walk around Anvil.
  • Stop and talk to folks who’ve got stalls set up
  • See how many IC tea/coffeeshops (and/or pubs) you can find and start building a ranked list of what you enjoy
  • See how many IC food places you can find and enjoy
  • Check in the Hub if there’s any IC musicals/plays/debates going on. Grab someone from your group and go watch it
  • Start a conversation with a stranger about the weather in Anvil. See where it takes you
  • Stop and listen to what’s going on at the Regio and ask the person next to you what’s happening/why something is being done
  • Wander up to the Anvil Hospital and offer to assist with Triage on the come back from conjunctions
  • Wander up to the Anvil Hospital and just be a nosey parker

Don’t let yourself just go from Gate to camp, ferment at camp, Gate to camp

If you’ve got energy to do a walk, go for a walk around Anvil and see what catches your attention. The game is much more improved by the “silly little things” that don’t seem big and plotty

Ah, this is a familiar problem.

Your character is built to do one thing, on paper, and likely does it pretty well (I am also a battlemage healer).

But your character is more than their stats.

What do they care about? What do they want? What are they interested in?

Perhaps ritual magics on the side? Maybe crafting of some sort? Stories? History? Romance? Entertainment?

If you want to understand some backstory and lore, I can say from experience that going and finding out by asking people can certainly keep you busy/entertained/terrified.

Heck, you can even go on skirmishes

Thank you, I do skirmishes already but only when I feel absolutely confident with the people we are going with.

I guess I was just checking there was some secret mage group that I wasn’t aware of XD

My advice on skirmishes

Go on one where there’s someone scrabbling for numbers at the Gate and you may not know anyone.

Introduce yourself to the clankiest MF in the line and two others around you.

See how it goes.

Having been both sides (roped in last minute and organising last minute), it’s a fun way to get to know folks outside of your Nation and build up a broader network that’ll give you more hooks into other bits of magic game that you might not think about interacting with because “it’s (Nation) problem, not my Nation’s problem.”

(Smaller Nations will forever thank you, on larger conjunctions, for rocking up and asking, as, regardless of how much footwork the strategos does, will struggle to pull 50-60 folks

…Least of all for some Nations, that’s above the number of skirmish beans that exist in play AND if the wheel of plot provides 8 violence focused conjunctions, with the first set of three being back-to-back just after monstering)
