Im looking to create a aet of mage armour for a wintermark stienr battle mage and i was wondering if anyone had any inspiration or examples of what they have done
I don’t play a Wintermarker, but I’ve had good results from a “chain of runes” painted and repeated across my armour, best shown in photo below.
Painted on runes are fairly easy to do and personalise, to adapt, expand, and repeat on other pieces.
In my case:
Jotra - Rhyv - Xun -Evrom - Verys - Gralm
Battle - Blood - Transformation - Beginning - Might - Destiny
“This blood you have shed in battle is transformed into the beginning of your glorious (Mighty) destiny”
Why yes, I am a Dawnish mage healer, what gives it away ![]()
What do you use to paint on your runes? I’m trying to paint runes onto leather very similar to your headband atm and struggling to get the precision and clarity that I’d like (and you seem to have!)
I happen to know Geoff used bog standard artist’s acrylics on that set. The large gold sections got a yellow undercoat but as I recall the runes are freehand straight on the leather, in several coats. Small pointy brush, thick paint but light coats, let each layer properly dry before the next goes on. Expect to touch up annually. It helps if you’ve been painting Warhammer etc. minis since your teens…
Yes, standard acrylics, painted on freehand with the symbols I needed in front of me.
On the one hand, absolute precision and perfect placement can look like complex precise runic circles… on the other hand, slightly warped and individual designs looks a lot more handmade and personal.
I also used, over the runes, painted on clear matt varnish. To avoid the acrylic being scuffed off. This has enabled that armour set to survive years of intermittent use with only one or two cases of needing retouching.
