New Player Advice

Hi all,

Looking at starting my first event at E4 this year and have been doing a lot of research on who I want to be. So far I’ve settled on a Varushkan winter mage with a focus on rituals, still deciding on the rest of the details I need to pick out for my character, but I was hoping I could get some new player information from more experienced people to help me start out with.

I’ve been debating between going for a farm or mana site as my resource. The mana site would definitely be valuable for rituals, but the extra income from the farm would be useful for my first event to help me get the lay of the land a bit (from what I gather I’ll be able to respect stuff for my character for free after my first event, I’m guessing this would extend to a personal resource) but I’m not sure how easy it is to get crystallised mana from other sources without the mana site income. I know costs buying stuff like that in the field can vary, but is there a rough guide to figuring out how much those kind of things are worth?

I’m sure there’s plenty of other questions that I’m not even aware of to ask, so if anyone has any other good bits of new player advice, especially for Varushka, I’d love to hear it!

Thanks in advance

When choosing your personal resource, there are a number of different factors to consider.

  1. What is your nation’s voting resource. For Varushka, that’s mines and forests. Varushka has 17 national titles assigned by Tally of the Votes, which is more than any other nation. You don’t need to be a mine or forest owner to be elected, but only mine and forest owners (or those who purchase/acquire their votes) get to decide.
  2. Great works. Varushka only has great works which benefit mines and forests, with forests in Ossium getting 6 additional measures. Note that you don’t get great work benefits until after your first event.
  3. Utility. If you plan to cast winter rituals using your own mana crystals, then it will be cheaper to produce them than buy them.
  4. Trading is easy, and also an opportunity for role-playing interactions. I have a fixed location (in the League) with my prices on a blackboard, and I frequently trade in mana. Without discussing the prices themselves, I can say that if someone sold me 18 measures of a forest material (12 + 6 from the Ossium great work), they would be able to buy more mana crystals from me than they would get as a mana site. If they wanted cash, they would get more than the 180 rings produced by a farm or business.
  5. Vibes. Having a mana site might be better for your character’s story. However, I wouldn’t recommend going for a farm in Varushka just to get coin in your pouch when you can easily sell your mana crystals for as much or more cash if you need to.

Welcome to Empire, and to Varushka!

The technical way to work out how much a personal resource is worth is to think of them all as equivalent: the amount of mana crystals you get would be roughly equal to the amount of money you’d get from a farm. The issue of course is when you hit the field - your money is a stable amount, whereas selling your mana crystals depends on what people are buying/selling for.

When I joined, I had a business (which also just gives money), and I did find it useful for finding my feet, especially as I didn’t immediately get into doing rituals. You absolutely can sell your mana, and would almost certainly get more money doing that than by having a farm, but it also depends on if you want to be doing that straight off the bat. Some people love the trading game, some find it a bit of a hassle!

It’s also worth considering how much you’ll use mana crystals yourself. I know some magicians (myself included) who only tend to cast magic for others, so ask for the mana to be covered. However it goes both ways; if you want someone to cast something on you, then they’ll likely want the mana in payment!

Also yes, you’re right that you can respec after your first event. After that, you can still switch your resource, but it’ll cost you 2 crowns (a farm produces 9 crowns, plus every player gets 18 rings on top of their resource).

There’s definitely a vibes argument to be had as well; sometimes it’s just cool to have the thing that makes the “most” sense for your character! And having a physical resource to trade or use is often more interesting - it’s the reason I switched from a business to a fleet. Having the money was useful, but having the stuff is more fun, even if it’s more work.

Other bits of good advice for Varushka: go to the Mages/Volhov’s Meeting (normally at half 6 on Friday), as this will help you see what’s happening in the magic game, as well as give you a chance to meet some of our better-known mages. There’s a number of Winter covens in Varushka which may or may not be accepting new members; they tend to do slightly different flavours of Winter as it has a few different aspects to it. Or you can work on saving up for a Volhov’s Robe, which allows you to work with other covens without officially joining them.

For all new players, I think it can be worth treating your first summit or two as a tourist. It’s a BIG game with a lot of players so it can be a little overwhelming at times, and I’ve known people to get discouraged when they couldn’t immediately do or get the thing that they wanted. Obviously if you’ve read through some things and have decided what you want to achieve then great! But it’s also fine to take your time exploring options.

One of the biggest things is just talking to people. It can be really daunting at first, but most larpers love to talk! The magic phrase is “I’m new to Anvil” - doing this lets people know that you’re a new player, so most will take their time to explain things or help out. Varushka is a pretty friendly bunch for the most part!

As a Varushkan Winter mage, I’m happy to help if you have any other questions, either here or via PM

I hadn’t considered the great works, that’s something I’ll need to do some reading on. Does the first event restriction apply based on the character or would I still have to wait an additional event if I changed my resource to a forest at any point?

I can answer with 100% confidence but if you change to a forest during an event then you should get the downtime benefit of the Great Work after that event.

Just a quick note that another Great Work is currently being built that will benefit businesses in the territory of Karov, though it’s not finished yet.
