New player from E1, wanted to thank everyone for the warm welcome and to ask a couple of questions!

Hi everyone, my friend James and I joined Empire for the First time at E1 and we had a fantastic time! We got stuck into a few skirmishes and ended up joining Dawn, first and foremost I wanted to thank everyone for the warm welcome and for being so helpful during our first time in Anvil! For those whom I may have ran into I was the fella in the gambeson vest and the belt that was constantly falling off!

I had a couple of questions relating to joining a house. What would be the best way of going about that? My friend made a new character as a knight errant whilst I went to both Marcher and Dawnish egragores and changed nations. Would there be a resource such as a discord server to let people within the nation know out of game that we’re looking to join?

I was also wondering what position would be appropriate for my character to take on, my character’s skillset revolves around combat and my resource is a military unit, would knight errant be appropriate despite having recently switched nation?

Many thanks

Hello Nick, welcome along to the game, the forums, and (fellow Dawnish player) the nation!

Glad you had a good time, don’t sweat the belts, the classic ring belt can be tricky

Joining a House:
Playing as Knights Errant allows you the in-game reason to wander around, asking questions, visiting and lingering and moving on, both in and out of game.
I’d advise asking around, talking to existing players, asking what the theme and style of a House is (also colour scheme!), and finding which Houses are recruiting. Some are set up on a particular ideal (eg a coven of war-witches, or a dedicated in-game goal), some on an OOC criteria (pre-existing friends, or only gamers from Birmingham).
So, ask around, find likely groups, chat to them in or before play, and join up. Note that you can start play as a yeofolk, knight errant, or established noble, it just depends how much effort (and it’s not much) you wish to put into writing up the character (Bob the wealthy farmer needs very little, Lord Robert Blackblade a little more…). Advancing in social status in play is also do-able, and is one of the main themes of Dawn…

Finding folk:

Discord servers… Dawn does have one, I’m not sure how to invite you to it but it’s here:

There is also an official and moderated facebook group for the nation, here:

And of course, there are these forums. If you wish to avoid the above, I will carry a message or two back and forth to get folk to come answer questions here.

As for position… yeah Knight Errant is fine, even with a military unit. Picture this:
“Byrne the Bloody crossed the border into Dawn, his warband close at his heels. A new start. A chance to get them some respect, and march proudly beneath new colours. Sir Byrne 's Blades, perhaps. He would find the Dawnish Egregore and bind himself to the land, and find a worthy Lord for them all to follow. If he could just find one with some good colours as well…”

However if by “position” in that you mean Archetype, I’ll just clarify that those are optional. You don’t NEED to pick one, and you can change them in play. I recently changed from Retainer to Troubadour, for instance.

Now, hopefully that helps

Thank you so much! that has helped massively! I really really appreciate all the advice! I’m gonna get to looking on the discord and facebook asap and add a little write up to my character so I’m better prepared than I was for E1!

Many thanks!
Nick
