So, where to begin, well ! Hello! to start… me and a few other friends are coming to the event in april 25 and i have well a butt load of questions. Me and one of my friends are doing a Brother sister duo type situation she is going mystic and im stuck with what archetype to go with… were thinking Kallavessi and i like the idea of being like Monster hunters on the tundra as a back story come to anvil to seek fortune and glory against the barbarians.
I have a couple of questions -
Shield and spear - is that a viable weapon combo ? From the looks of it not - cause to have a spear you need weapon master which means i would have to hold the spear with both hands… is there a way to do Shield and spear? or shall i ditch the shield idea
Question 2 : Which archetype should i go for - I dont think the character is a Thane? he is a Warrior / hunter so i was thinking on selecting no Archetype or maybe Mystic just stack weapon and heroics with a touch of magic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Quesiton 3 - is there a specific Group on FB that i should look to join for Wintermark?
Thats it for now - if i have any more ill add them here
We are happy to answer questions here, and you’ve plenty of time to get the answers.
Dual monster hunter siblings is a nice concept, and there are plenty of monster hunter groups in play who’d happily play along, tell stories, etc.
Archetype is more of a “pre-set character concept”, Kallevesi is one of the Wintermark Traditions. Her being “Mystic” archetype and you being a more martial hunter type is fine.
Fortune is unlikely to be had vs the barbarians (they have minimal loot), but renown, heroic deeds, recognition and reputation… plenty of that…
Shield/spear IS a valid combo, and usually with a one handed stab-safe spear. Seen more in Navarr than Wintermark, but go for it. Two handed spear does lean more towards “big game hunter”, but either works,
[Note: I strongly reccomend purchasing weapons on-site. Stab-safe spears especially are made by few and quite tricky]
You don’t need an archetype at all. It’s an optional label that may be helpful.
(You asked for any advice, so here’s a SUGGESTION)
For a hunter type character, I’d go for:
Weapon Master (2) Allowing any size spear
Shield Use (2)
Hero (2)
Extra Hero point (1)
Either Cleaving blow or Mighty Strikedown (1) (depending on your weapon, you’d then be calling CLEAVE or STRIKEDOWN 3 times)
Now if you’re in medium armour (heavy leathers) then you’d get +3 points and +1 Hero point.
That’d leave your hunter with the option of spear/shield or big spear, on 5 hits, and able to call 4 debilitating calls on opponents.
Thoughts?
Yes there is. The Wintermark Facebook group is here. Joining is pretty fast.
Happy to answer any further questions. Have you done any LARP before, as I have a few intro videos for new gamers if you’d like…?
So! the thing about the weapons - i am going with Saxon Violence - they are a company that do stab safe and they supply a specific vendor at empire - so most likely ill go with him and im going for a 7ft spear ((which ill wintermark/Kallvessi it up with attachments and stuff.
I think i am going to go with your suggestion is the honest answer - i think it fits the hunter class and i like the call outs.
Medium Armour is where i have an issue, i was going to go basic for my outfit to start Shirt trousers pauldron/bracers… I was going to use E1 as my getting to know the lay of the land. I’m a big lad … 6ft big chest and belly - and armour is going to be something thats going to be harder to find from the looks of it … unless you can suggest some where that does bigger mens sizes (( i did put another post on the forum… but that was for just the clothing not the armour))
Thoughts are brilliant if i can find a Set of medium armour to wear ill happily don it and rock the build you mentioned.
Next question - I was thinking about selecting Thane as my archetype and Military unity as my resource, because, im the leader of my village and the military unit is a group of monster hunters that help in the north with the Ice storm and creatures that come out of it and help the varuskans some time with defending their rodes…
Thourghts on the above? and thank you again for the response its VERY helpful.
I’m afraid it’s been a while since I went shopping for armour myself, so I’m not sure where to suggest. There ARE a lot of vendors at the events, and they do go for the big sizes more than the small ones, so you’d probably be fine? As an aside, Wintermark is certainly big enough you may be able to find someone willing to sell or lend armour to you. Ask on their FB group.
Thane and MU sounds good for what you want. Patrolling group of road wardens is an interesting idea, gives them some flavour.
Seconding Geoffrey’s comment about armour in field
Leather’s one of the ones that is frequently sold in mostly larger body friendly sizes…if you were aiming for plate or maille, you’d be in a slightly sticky spot.
If you’re able to borrow first and find something that works for you, ask folks who made their armour. There’s a lot of absolutely fantastic leather workers in field/associated with Empire.
And, genuinely, custom stuff for armour- especially if you’re wanting to wear it as standard kit- is worth it.
I would also, strongly, recommend getting yourself a padding layer (gambeson) to wear between your clothes and whatever armour you settle on.
Saves on awkward, often unable to be scrubbed out, leather stain staining on base kit…and also, if your armour isn’t an exact custom fit, it saves on really uncomfortable pinching/rub injuries
(Granted, I’m often on the opposite side of the problem of armour.
My maille that I wear for battles is designed for someone larger than me. So, I need to bulk out my base stuff to ensure I don’t cause myself a damage.
…plus side, one piece of armour covers all three points that are needed by the rules to get the delicious heavy protection)
