New players from Hampshire

Hello friends! I am in a group of three new players from Southampton and Portsmouth, we are excited to be part of the community and start our journey here~ Thought I could ask here for any advise from veterans, and also maybe meet up people from around this area? We would love to meet new people so if you’re from around leave a message!

Question 1: any good website/video for lore recap or world immersion?

Question 2: how to properly choose a character? I have some ideas but I’m not sure if as a first timer I should aim for specific nations/characters.

Question 3: as a group of three should we aim for similar things?

Question 2: There are no ‘starter’ nations or roles, everything is open and accessible to anyone. I’d say start by choosing what nation you want to be and then what you want to do, remember that the archetypes are guide posts, not rigid classes.

Question 3: If you want to be a group IC then odds are you are going to want to be in the same nation (as while all nations are friends they often have opposing interests). Likewise if you want to get into the Magic game all being of the same Realm of magic makes you an already not insignificant Coven (bonded group of mages who can work together collaboratively.)

Hi there, and welcome to Empire!

Recapping is a bit of a tough one - the game has been going since about 2013 I think (though with a recent two-year pause). The recent history page brings together a lot of what has happened over the years. There’s a LOT however, so your best bet is to decide on your nation, territory, and interests, and then focus on the recent events relevant to those things.

I’d recommend reading these wonderful guides put together by one of our players for when it comes to character creation and understanding the world in general:

Choosing a nation is your first step, and ideally you’ll want to be in one together if you want to do most of your stuff together. Start there and see how you go! As Ricohard says, there’s no real starter choice, they all have pros and cons. We’re here if you’ve got any questions during the process!

Hello there and welcome to the game and these forums!

  1. here are a couple of simple video introductions:

Here is a generic welcome video from a few years back, still very good:

This from a couple of friends (they are really keen on Dawn… try not to get influenced by this, all the nations are awesome).

If you want immersion, LARP isn’t a hobby that lends itself well to film… photo montages with thundering soundtracks, yes
(watch out there are LOADS here… recent Empire ones at the top)

  1. Your best starting point, i think, is to choose some sort of starting concept and pick a nation to play it in, or pick a nation and choose what to play in it.

A good starting point is to read the top page of each nation, see which one or two appeal to you, then look a little deeper.

What experience do have have at LARP/Camping/Role-playing games, if any? (None at all is fine).

As noted, there are no starter nations etc, and there will be new players in every nation. There are a few more complex areas of the game I would not reccomend for your first event, but that’s an issue for later.

  1. Well that depends. You CAN all do the same sort of thing, in the same group, in the same nation. This will give you a powerful but rather focussed view of the game (for instance, if you’re all playing ritual magicians you may entirely miss things like the trading, or military, or political, or religeous games… which may be fine or not.

I would suggest you (plural) look at the sort of things that interest you, and each pick characters based on that. And then either form your own small group (3 is fine, there are groups of 20+ but also many of less than 5) or all join the same one.

This would give you the incentive to head out and explore things individually, and a place/reason for you all to meet up and play together.

Happy to discuss this further, and answer any questions.

There is a large contingent of Empire players in Southampton and Portsmouth, and a load more of us scattered about the county.

Hi, I’m also a new player from Southampton, I didn’t realise there was quite a few people that go to empire from here. I’d be interested in getting to know some more local people going.
