I’d like to ask about Navarr characters who are Brands, but are not in (or seeking) leadership positions. I was reading the Brand page earlier and realised I’ve always misread something: it talks about the expectation that Navarr leaders should be Brands, but it doesn’t say that Brands are (generally) expected to be leaders.
Is that a correct reading? That it’s appropriate to create a Navarr character who takes an oath of service to the people (with a range of options to which people), but isn’t seeking leadership? For example a physick, apothecary or artisan. Or a historian, teacher or a scholar of some other type.
So this has been a contencious subject in my experience, my brand is to the Nation as a whole to equip them as best I can as an artisan, instead of just to a specified group of players, its totally on brief acourding to the wiki but a few people seemed to think it was a big deal cos that isn’t how it was usually played. One person kept using the term “people would be suspicious of a brand without having people they are sworn to” but in my experience everyone was totally cool with it.
I also have a part of it as my role of national broker.
I also play an non-leader brand, and yes, in my opinion the wiki is quite explicit that Brands are servants of the people, and the Navarr mindset should be that you can’t lead unless you have promised to serve, but not all those who serve lead.
I’ve found it quite frustrating that that’s not necessarily how it seems to be in play, I mean, on the Brand page in the wiki the first three paragraphs are about how you are a servant of the people and, only one on how brands also happen to be leaders. it also states pretty obviously that you can choose to serve the nation as a whole or the entire empire even, not your specific group of close friends
Personally my Brand oath is as a healer, I look after the physical and emotional well being of my nation. I dont know why I would limit that to just a few people, or why I would look to lead people because I’m a doctor? doesn’t make a lot of sense!
