On the subject of buying javelins

Hi. I’m considering joining in as a member of the Brass Coast next year (I’ll be 14 and want to fight immediately after passing the Test of Arms), so need to start thinking about costume and weapons. As a sailor, I’ve decided on a harpoon in my offhand. However after some searching, I’ve struggled to find somewhere I can buy a cored (or even uncored) javelin.
If anyone knows a location or website, it would be much appreciated

If a weapon has a core you must not throw it. So I would recommend looking at the traders for stab safe spears. Saxon Violence does a great line of historic spears and if asked may make a hunting/fishing spear. Look at upwards of £100 for a nice stab safe spear. As for throwing javelins I would advise against it. They are unwieldy and cumbersome, likely to be lost ect. Some exist and I know some people monster with similar so look about.
Costume as a free born can be straight forward to get. Hareme pants are a perfect mix of colour, shape and weight and can be layered under when cold. Ill let other people talk more on the costume aspects. Have you joined the Brass Coast facebook page?

That’s strange. I thought I found someone mentioning on the forum that javelins can be cored. Oh well, I may avoid them for now. Certainly without a core they would become far more cumbersome as you said. Would you recommend any particular weapons for a corsair?
In terms of costume, I think I’m pretty much completely designed, though I won’t know what it’s like until I make it. Armour is the only drawback because of cost.
Thank you, I will certainly check out the Facebook page.

Any would work. Do you want to go:
Shield and 1 handed? Look for round Greek/spartan style shields and weapons with a curve. Think crescent axe, cutlass, saber ect

2 Handed- Falchions, khopeshes, anything thing that has that kind of look. Single bladed has the Brass Coast feel. Avoid straight swords I would say.

Pole arm / Spear- Any viking style spear would work fine. Or a harpoon ect.

Also these are what I think looks brass coast. Your opinion matters more. If you really like a Zwie-hander then get one. Make a story as to where you got it and why you like it.

Armour is always the most tricky part of the costume to get as you want it to be somewhat comfortable. Chain is the king of larp armor but again I wouldnt know so much for the coast. Are you thinking heavy med or light?

My original idea was a leather cuirass with some asymmetrical leather pieces here and there, so I’m guessing light, or perhaps medium if its thick enough. Apparently the dream of every BC warrior is colourful scale mail, so perhaps some of that embellishing it. In general though, for any armour, the cost is a massive concern. I’ve been checking in quite a few places, including Ebay, and, honestly, it’s looking more and more tempting to go with just two hits. I’d love to find something even for under £50, though that’s still a strain.
I have read some other things and have decided I will buy weapons (probably not armour) at the event, or maybe bring a simple long dagger in case.

Thrown Weapons

  • You must have the Thrown skill to use a thrown weapon
  • Must be 8" or longer and passed by weapons check as safe for throwing

You may throw weapons of 8” or larger provided that it has been passed as safe for throwing. Throwing weapons may include axes and javelins, but you cannot throw shuriken, rocks, or tiny throwing knives shorter than 8” long.

it does not say they can not be cored it will depend on the weapon and check with pd as most throwing javelins i have seen do have a core. The important thing is a weapon should be designed to be thrown and most throwing weapons are coreless as easiest way to make them safe

What you will find with alot of throwing weapons is they are not neccesarily that damaging as just do a single.

Also if limited budget throwing weapons are not going to be cheap and may get lost. I would come and play and see about getting them later.

I was aware of the wiki page, but that particular article was not particularly informative. It is nice to know that rules vary depending on specific weapon, but even so, it may be too stressful and expensive, as you say, to decide on immediately

yeah come along and try different weapons out. If you ask alot of people will teach you different things and you can see what is there and what you like. You may find in the field that other things work better for you.

I recently (as in within the last week) queried PD about javelins, and got told ‘They are allowed to have cores, and if so should have a collapsable tip, not unlike a stab safe spear.’

It will, of course, go down to the individual weapon at weapons check, but there we go.

Hey Mannalos: the only way to get a definitive answer to a rules query between events is to email rules@profounddecisions.co.uk. Usually replies within a day or two ime
