Questions on How to Join a Marches Household

Hello everyone,

My friends and I are looking to come to this year’s Autumn Equinox game as first time players. We would like to join the Applewood levy or the Boundaryfolk as yeomen or beaters but we are unsure who to contact as we have read you need to contact a household steward before making a character who is joining the household. Who are the head stewards of these groups and how can they be contacted? Thanks in advance for all the help, we are very excited to play!

All the groups, as you have rightfully mentioned, are player groups

Some do allow “hey I’m interested” without initially meeting folks, others prefer to meet folks face-to-face before they consider going “eyup, we’ll be happy to play opposite you and have you associated with us”

Advice is enter play either as a house of your own making, or enter sans group and approach them IC before joining

I think the Applewood Levy is not as visible on field anymore, but have RPed opposite the Boundaryfolk in the past year

forgive me for not knowing but by “not as visible on field anymore” does that mean the applewood levy is basically no longer active? Would it be possible if so, for new players to join as part of the Levy and bring it back or is each Household very much one group of IRL players who know each other? If so, is it best to make characters who aren’t from any household and then aim to join one while in-game?

It may be that there are still players for that group present, but they’re not a large number and not often out of Nation. (Not like King’s Stoke or Cockcroft or Boarbridge or…)

If you’re not part of the folks who originally wrote the blurb and handed it over to PD to put on the wiki, my advice is do not create your characters as part of that group.

Player groups are often folks who know each other and have gone “let’s make a group together.”

Some groups actively look for new folks to join them after one conversation

Some go “if we vibe, hop on in”

Others go “we only want this for a small group of us, but have put our group name up on the Wiki because it allows folks to spell our group name correctly, gives a point of contact for letters/looking for in field, and makes the world feel like a world.”

You can, if you’re coming in with a group, create your own household…or, as you’ve said, enter play without one and shop about in the field

Just to underline a point of Squeek’s advice… you may as well TRY asking the Boundaryfolk, probably via the Marcher Facebook group (linked below)…

Actually, I’ll ask if they can drop by here as well…

The Levy are certainly active, we’re just not charging about the place shouting a lot. :grinning_face:

Hi, I can confirm that the Applewood Levy is still very active!! We have about 10-12 members depending on event, a mix of mage, military and herbalists. We run a stall selling all sorts of things too.

So the Boundaryfolk currently consist of:

  • A pile of corpses, accounting for most of the regular adult attendees, whose players are off to pastures new.
  • Various newly-orphaned young players, most-to-all of whom who will be retiring to rejoin their adults’ new groups.
  • A number of other participants whose attendance is either not as regular as has been in the past for OOC reasons or has never been regular.
  • Two very frazzled monks trying to deal with the aftermath of the above pile of corpses and have a lot of their own nonsense to deal with on top of that. (I’m one of them.)

Ok, I’m joking a little: we don’t have a pile of corpses, the dead got left behind on the battlefield.

The upshot of this that if you want your first time experience to be with a group which has been rocked to its core and whose surviving members may be caught up in their IC trauma, the Boundaryfolk might be something we can talk about… but it sounds a lot like you are after a group with more stability who can help you find your feet.

As a result, the Applewood Levy is probably your best bet, but if you do want to be thrown in the deep end get in touch and I can check in with the other survivors…

ahah, it sounds like time has been hard on the Boundaryfolk recently! Thank you for the summary, and I think you make some great points! While my group does love our grisly emotional backstories in other RP games, I think some more stable ground in a LARP setting, especially as first time players is our best bet. I will discuss with them, but it sounds like it best to come unaffiliated and see how our first game goes :+1: thanks again for the low-down
