Real Meaningful Pirate Capt. Look - Avoiding Pit Fulls & Myths

I’m spending a chunk of money on new pieces of clothing for my character, (3 figures worth) and I’ve had a decent defined look with my colours and basicness of what I wore.

What would you say are the items to keep clear of making several new outfits - I know not to have the Tricorn .

Secondly what are the items that most define the Capt. look? Do you think Jewelry would add or detract? I was in fact looking at a decent black wool Guyfawks hat, where the center rose up in that hats distinctive look, and the other i was looking at was a Musketeer hat where the sides are larger and off center, with an amazing feather attached… and i know the bigger the feather in your hat… the more … … … Respect? you’ll have? hahaha!

Thoughts please… and i’m just asking; the styles I’ve mentioned… They are ok… Time period wise… right?

Peace!!

The hat idea seems pretty good.

I played a Captain type character for a bit (Dawnish Pirate Lord) and went for* a long coat, fancy buttons, ornate trim, and gold bands at collar and wrist**. He died shortly after getting this costume upgrade, but it looked good :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d avoid a cloak or pelisse. Something that would look good on the command deck but which you could also do a roll across the storm-tossed deck in…?

You are aware, I’m sure, of this page, and the advice re inappropriate costume.

*By which I mean, my wife made it and it was awesome.

**While this is often a real-world mark of rank, it’s sufficently plain bling to fit and look appropriate, with an almost subliminal tone of “Captain”.

What nation are you playing in? That might help narrow down a look.

From his other thread looks like the League.

I would have the widest brimmed hat you can put on your head with the biggest feather personally .

But I do recall one player putting a whole model boat on her head as a fascinator, so that might be a direction to look at for hat decoration as well  .

Oh when you say wool guyfawks hat, do you have a picture you can point us at as I’m not sure what kind of hat you mean?

This made me actually LOL.. yeah i do remember that Hat and Feather size is what it’s about in the League haha!

The League :+1: :+1: I have a good idea on colours i’m happy with i’m just asking you guys for what you think looks good for a Pirate League Capt.. & talking about what doesn’t work and should avoid.

Forgive me, it’s not fully Wool .. click this link to Amazon, it will show you. I’m NOT suggesting the V for vendetta hat.. No..

I believe it’s called a “pilgrims Hat” but I think it’s synonymous to Guy Fawkes, let me know what you think of this style.. it may be to modern .. perhaps.

It’s very connected to that era in 17th Century USA and I’m not sure it’s on brief for the League which is more based on styles of a few hundred years earlier. You can see a few hat styles in the League Look and Feel page and League Costumes page.

Yeah i believe your right, it’s just not right, the next few pages i’m working through looking at are the flat hats and pomp and high class hats that you see on the costume page on the Wiki.

Thanks for confirming what I thought

The slouch hat and hats derived from it (bicorn, tricorn, musketeer, pilgrim) are all several hundred later than the League brief, I believe. As is the golden age of piracy along with all its imagery and tropes.

The brief is closer to 15th century. So searching for “15th century sailor” is likely to give more appropriate inspiration. Christopher Columbous has a pretty fine hat in the one image that you get when you search for him - it may give the vibe you are looking for.

Thanks Dave.

Can I see about these 3 hats below in the links - Personally, number 3 myself. (I’d totally add several large feathers when I arrive at Empire hehe)

Leather Hat #1
Leather Hat #2
Leather Hat #3

I think that both #1 and #3 are C17th hats. They are a couple of hundred years more modern than the League brief, as I understand it.

The first visual that springs to mind for a League captain for me is Ramirez in the Highlander movie.

That said, how I’d do it would be really bright feathers on a suitably impressive hat, a single shoulder half-cape with nautical decoration and then bracers (maybe even a girdle if they’re League appropriate) of an embossed leather in unusual colour that IC is sea serpent hide and has a great story attached that the character is very fond of telling.

Dave has it! Hat 1 and 3 are both way too late for the League. Hat 2 is good, that’s the direction you want to look in.
