Are there any good guides to making a scabbard for larp swords I can make them till the cows come home for steels but I’m concerned about using thicker leathers likes a steel and causing snagging issues.
I had considered using camping mat foam for the core coated in suede but not sure how it would work
Try some linoleum flooring instead of camping mat. Should prove to be a little more rigid and resistant to damage than camping mat.
Make the scabbard form as per design, shiny lino side on the inside of the scabbard (for a smoother draw), wrap the outside in leather/ fabric/ whatever, decorate to taste.
You should be able to pick up lino flooring offcuts dirt cheap, and I figure that the above construction should be able to handle rivetting rather than just glue.
One material to avoid is leatherette, I made one as I had some spare stuff, after a night of rain it stuck to sword and removing it took all the paint/ latex of said sword!
Or a partial wool lining that only covers a few inches down from the mouth, and wraps around to the outside of the mouth slightly. (I have a leather scabbard like that and it works fine.)
