Spells and armor

Hi!

Never been to Anvil before. I am thinking about my character concept. Long story short, it would be fitting for my characters lore to have the magician skill (but then not advance further on that skill branch). I read that you are not allowed to cast spells whilds wearing armor. Is that for all the time or only in combat or high stakes situations? I plan on making some leather armor. Will this prevent me for using the basic spells like operate portal while in anvil? If yes, could remove partial of my armor (until it dosnt count as a set) to cast, or do I need to be completely bare?

Thanks for the clarification!

Hi,

The rule as stated on Spellcasting - Empire is “If you have the battle mage skill then you can cast spells while wearing mage armour, but you cannot cast spells while wearing regular armour. The only exception is a helmet: helmets do not interfere with spellcasting in any way.” On https://www.profounddecisions.co.uk/empire-wiki/Weapons\_%26_armour#Armour it says “Any character can wear armour, but magicians cannot cast spells or perform rituals while wearing any armour other than mage armour.”

Also, light armour is “Padded cloth or thin leather armour (between 1.5mm and 3mm)”, “leather clothing or similar does not count”.

Personally, I would assume that you need to take off all the armour (or at the very least the torso portion) in order to cast spells. You could email rules@profounddecisions.co.uk if you’d like a definitive ruling, but from the sounds of it, having to remove armour every time you want to cast operate portal will add character to your character.

“No spells while in armour” counts all the time.

As noted, mage armour, helmets, nothing else.

As to exactly where that boundary is might be interesting (“If I put on this one armguard, does it count? What about both? A pauldron?”), that’s a question to throw to the rules team:

rules@profounddecisions.co.uk

I strongly suspect that the answer will be something like: “No armour at all. If it’s intended to be thumped and looks protective, it’s armour.”

Mage armour, by contrast, tends to look more decorative than protective.

So yeah, you may need to strip off the armour while casting. Can you make some that is quick to don/remove?
