That strange post-event task

As we bid farewell to September, the last month with a big Empire event (and this year, the last one at Dadford), we’re likely finishing up the little jobs packing stuff away for winter.

I’m not talking about:
Airing out the tent
Laundering all the soft kit
Cleaning and oiling the armour
Taking the rubber bands off all your weaponry…

(you did do that, didn’t you? Yes? Good…)

I’m talking about the thing you did NOT see coming. That task that if you mention it to non-larping friends, they look deeply skeptical. Well, more so than normal.

Typing up your notes from the IC meetings.
Checking the camp lighting before packing it all away.
Stocktaking all the shinies (really, you should have changed up all those Rings…)

And in my case, polishing my hat.

I’ve a large wide-brimmed leather hat, often worn while OOC. After the soggy take-down last time, and generally in preparation for winter weather, it needs care and waterproofing. Which leads to me occasionally attacking it with shoe polish, along with my boots.

How about you? What do you do as you carefully pack things away?

It’s the yearly patch and embroidery check

I’ve got a number of weekend long player events coming up (including this weekend), so it’s a lot of “well, that needs fixing”

It’s also the kit purge and tidy up

Cutting off and making good the brim of my hood, because I put the horn holes too far back and it hangs over my eyes.

Cleaning strange gunk/fungal lifeforms out of small bottles that were carefully stashed away then forgotten about.

Despite not yet being able to attend I have been getting weird looks sat in my work van hand sewing a Sheaf to slot into my back Quiver that will double up as a belt Quiver

Or making Foraging pouches out of Cloth and Leather and fire kits out of leather with emergency tinder sewing them together

Looking strange hunting down collecting Kgs of East Yorkshire Flint and silver birch bark to add to fire kit pouches

All ready for attendance to my first event and the first event at the new site
