Hey, I’m going to my first event this September and was wondering (given September’s stellar reputation for sun): what do people from the Brass Coast wear when its raining/generally wet?
I’ve got most of my kit sorted (including enough thermals to keep warm, decent hiking boots and wellies) so its mostly about my top half staying dry and I was thinking of getting something like a hooded woolen poncho and wearing it over a regular raincoat. Does that sound like it should be enough and will it fit the general theme?
Or is there anything that other people wear that’d be more appropriate?
Usually basic kit and an oilskin/wool cloak of some variety
There’s a few folks who’ve found very IC looking modern umbrellas and use those.
But if the wind gets up (as it’s prone to doing) or if you need both hands to do something, it’s not the most elegant solution
I also know a few folks, if the event is warm enough and the weather is “passing shower” variant, who just accept the soggy
(There’s some fantastic shots from multiple past events where it’s started chucking it down during skirmishes or battle…and you get very aesthetic shots of very soggy kohan)
Most of the rain we’ve had at Dadford is showers rather than sustained rain - some of which have dropped a lot of water in on go, but still usually measured in minutes. In which case the preferred option is to find an awning or tent to stand in and make a new friend while you wait!
If it’s forecast to be showery, I just plan to hide in tents.
If it’s forecast to be proper wet, I layer thermals → waterproof trousers/jacket → actual kit (making sure to cover up all the waterproof stuff, so sometimes I cut off the cuffs and collars to fit underneath). Usually that means that even should I end up getting soaked through, most of my core and legs should be dry.
Speaking of waterproof cloaks, I can’t seem to find one I like available to purchase in the UK, or that would be here in time for September. The style I have seen that I like the most so far is from Knightweave - Ranger Cloak, waterproof edition. Please help!
FIRSTLY
Don’t stress getting your kit “perfect” first time in field.
It will evolve as you play (and is encouraged to do so) and, as a “new to Anvil” bean, if you’re in the right cohort of your Nation’s kit, you’ll be doing fine
That said, you’ve two options
Buy/make a cloak that’s made of 100% wool.
Wool stays warm/keeps you dry when wet, despite getting stupidly heavy. It’s also pretty resistant to being set on fire, which is always a benefit to a setting where open fires will be present at colder events.
Leather does similar, but that’s expensive and sits weird beyond a shoulder caple/caplet
Buy/make a cloak in a design and colour you like. Make sure you can throw it in the washing machine
Buy Nikwax “wash in proofing” (or similar waterproofing material) and follow the instructions
This will need topping up periodically via a waterproofing spray, but genuinely works quite well
(Or combine the two)
ADDITIONAL STUFF (an edit)
If you can’t find a cloak you like that’ll arrive in time, blanket cloaks are valid. You’ll need a blanket (preferably with high natural fibre content) that you like and a big ol’ gaudy broach to pin it in the drape you want
There are vendors on site and there’s usually at least one who sells wool heavy blend cloaks if you get stuck and can’t find something you like online that’ll arrive in time
(And you can always waterproof as above AND modify it during downtimes)
