So I’m planning to roll a battlemage, and I’ve been looking around at possible staves. I found one here: RFB Wood LARP Staff
But I’m not sure whether or not it’s thrust-safe. I asked the retailer about it and another staff I was looking at, and they said this:
I have checked on both items as requested. Both are made from polyurethane foam, and the Staff of the Arch Mage offers a round flexible fiberglass core with strong Kevlar core tip protection. These items are made for responsible re-enactment or LARPing use. I hope this information helps! If you need anything else please let me know. Thank you, and have a great day!
That didn’t really answer my question. Not sure whether I’ll be able to stab with it or not. What do you guys think?
Also, if anyone could point me towards somewhere I could find thrust-safe staves of a similar design, I’d be grateful.
You’ll struggle to get a thrust-safe staff in that sort of design - the construction of the thrust-safe tip needs some width to work properly.
My staff (bought in the field, if I remember correctly an In Your Dreams FX build?) has a thrust-safe tip, so they definitely do exist. I think this style, with the large and very distinctive gem, is one of the more common ones you’ll see on sale; I know at least one of my friends has had a custom job, which I think was by Saxon Violence.
Skian Mhor made me an excellent stab safe staff in a normal staff kind of thickness - Redirecting... has a nice clear picture of the top. Because the top section is entirely coreless it droops a little bit if you aren’t careful, but is otherwise great. The Dark Knight Armoury version does not sound stabsafe.
In general I recommend avoiding US weapons manufacturers and ideally showing up to site and trying out weapons there, or at least having an email conversation with one of the traders listed on the wiki: https://www.profounddecisions.co.uk/empire-wiki/Traders
Here’s mine, which was done by Saxon Violence to a sketch I sent him. The top bit was designed to be roughly similar in proportions to a spear tip to make it easily to build. But as a big blue wizard crystal, not a metal blade.
This cost me £110, and was well worth it. I wanted something with a specific Marcher feel, thus the polearm-like design.
A lot of retailers refuse to declare as ‘stab safe’ or not, because if the stabbing turns out not to be safe, there is liability concerns.
But I can definitely echo the Saxon Violence shout out, they will happily declare stab safe and have a lot of expert knowledge in doing it (my spear is super nice)
