Hey people,
So, for my character, I’m thinking of either making or buying some kind of rectangular cloak type thing. I was just wondering what sort of material(s) would be best for this, as well as any other tips you may have.
Looking forward to your suggestions
This would depend on your budget? Personally I would use wool but that will cost around £40-£60 depending on quality, colour and your size. Why are you opting for a rectangular cloak? Are you able to sew yourself?
But if you want quick simple and cheap? I would go to a Military Surplus store and buy a woolen blanket, you might have to cut it depending on size, in which case you would need to sew the cut edge to stop it from fraying. Then all you need to do is buy a cloak clasp which are easily found on eBay.
But you would prefer to make something then let me know what you have in mind and I can advise you on the best approach.

Wool is best, both warm and at least a bit drizzle proof. Cheap option is to find a blanket in a charity shop, or try army surplus, since we still have a bit of time before e1 for looking around.
If you can find something suitable all you actually need is a heavy pin (kilt pins work, add a few beads, leather patches or feathers to make them look less modern) or invest in a penannular broach (plenty of options from the traders list on the event page), then spend a bit of time in front of the mirror working out how best to drape your blanket and you’re sorted.
If you want to sew it then there are several patterns for hooded and non hooded cloaks here , follow the link listed as ‘on this website’

Thanks both of you for your help, I’m certainly going to look into what you’ve suggested.
My preference would be to sew as little as possible, simply because I’m terrible.

If your budget stretches to it, Ceolred Monger is a re-enactment merchant who trades at Empire and does lovely wool cloaks, including rectangular wraps:
He and his wife are really nice and helpful and if you drop them an email before the event they’ll make sure they’ve got some for you to look at and give you tips on wearing.
