Understanding Potions

Hi! I am new to Empire and trying to understand the potion mechanics.
My biggest question that I’m struggling to find an answer to is this: do the drinkable potion phys reps actually have to be drinkable?
I saw that you have to have 10 seconds of appropriate roleplay to gain the benefits of a potion, is that just miming drink it? If so, what happens to the Phys rep once the card has been ripped open and used? Do people return it to the person they bought it from? Or do they end up in lost property a lot?

You can mime drinking the potion and then reuse the physrep for a different potion.

When you buy a potion, the seller should have a physrep on show, but will not generally be selling it to you with the card.

Hallo,

As above, most folks mime drinking/slopping goop on when doing potion use RP

Drinkable physreps are cool, but always carry the not too impossible chance of hitting someone with an uncommon allergy. (And with 3K+ folks at main events, you’re likely to bump into this more frequently than you think you would.)

Best bet is to have something that you keep on you (like a lil resin bottle, plastic vials, etc), which if you’re selling your potions, you brandish about before handing the lammie over to the person buying

Welcome along littledergon, to the game and these Forums!

Yes, often the “10 seconds roleplay” is someone fumbling the potion out (easy to do with a little bottle), pretending to open it, and then pretending to glug it down.

Often the little bottle, empty, is then stuffed back in a pocket/pouch to have another potion card attached. But yeah, a fair few do get dropped and end up in Lost Property.

As Wake noted, sometimes the seller will be waving physreps around, sometimes they’ll sell them additionally, and sometimes you need to provide them yourself.

As Squeek_D points out, ones you can actually drink are…risky.

If it’s a liquid, some people will try to drink it, even without knowing what it is (dangerous).

I did used to feed people potions they could actually drink, but those were ones I’d made fresh and adminstered myself (playing as a battlefield apothecary. It was lemonade with a bit of edible glitter and a drop of green food colouring).

The safest bet is likely to buy a few simple bottles for yourself, and use them repeatedly. My wife has got around the “hey, I’ll drink whatever!” issue using bottles filled with shiny resin; looks like a magic potion, doesn’t come out of the bottle.
