It’s my first LARP and I’m just trying to decide what to wear for Monstering. As their are multiple barbarian nations. (red for Jotun, green for Druj and purple for Grendal) Is it best to wear dark colours and then create like a sash of each colour to wear? I haven’t got a lot of time but I just need some quick, simple, and easy suggestions. Any ideas?
It’s neither needed or expected to have kit for every barbarian nation! Generic neutral/dark colours are absolutely fine. Ideally, have a long-sleeve, close necked top (shirt, tunic) and full length trousers to minimise the amount of skin on show.
PD have a certain amount of colour-coded sashes and tabards and monsters are generally grouped into units, so odds are at least one or two of your unit will be fully ‘kit coded’. Having a neutral belt or sash is handy here to secure and/or style kit that is one-size-fits-most, as is a belt loop that fits your weapon and a plain pouch in case you’re issued herbs/potions/anything else you don’t want to carry in your hand.
If you’re really, really keen, a cheap scarf or pashmina in each of the barbarian colours you can sling over one shoulder and secure with a belt is a nice touch. Depending on your nation, you may also find there are bits of your regular kit you can quickly and easily repurpose - Brass Coast bling on Grendel, Wintermark furs on Jotun and so on.
Seconding the idea of scarves
They don’t take up much space in bag, can be used as sashes/head covers/scarves, and are very easy to access
(I tend to monster as low com human roles, so base blacks/greys/browns and a scarf…and I’m set)
…they also, are wonderfully able to be repurposed for non-larp events
Please make sure you also have a water carrier.
Gloves and a neck scarf in something grubby coloured help with hiding people skin so you look better as an orc.
What would you recommend as a water carrier?
Genuinely, something that’s on a hip belt
To be a 100% shill, Dark Blade’s belt water bottle carriers (that come with a 500mL, but fit some 621mL bottles) are pretty solid and withstand being fallen on/hit
He also makes over the shoulder variants, but I prefer the ones that slide onto a hip belt to avoid having to constantly push them up
(He has an Etsy and is reliably at events)
EDIT:
There are stand pipes on the crew side of the hedge. Make sure your bottle is full before combat. You will end up drinking all of it during monstering
The classic ‘in a pinch’ is your bog standard plastic bottle of water stuffed in a long sock and tied to your belt.
