What do you carry?

Hi all,

I am still working on a few character concepts and as part of that trying to work out wardrobes, it got me thinking about how much space one needs on their person?

So what do you carry with you while IC both on and off the Battlefield?

Look forward to hearing all the interesting things you all carry

With regards,

Julian

I keep my IC and OC stuff firmly separate, partly so I can find my keys when stumbling back to my caravan in the middle of the night and partly so I don’t pull out something jarringly OC at an inconvenient moment.

I have a concealed zip pocket within my hip bag which has my OC gear (keys, pennies, lip salve/medicines, hand sanitiser).
The rest of that bag has IC money, resources and my potion physreps and cards.

I then have a second, over-the-shoulder bag which is bigger and stores all my paper - two notebooks, various pamphlets, song book(s) letters and pens. You will need a notebook and a pen/pencil (you can buy IC ones from the traders but have a look, you’d be surprised what could be IC from regular shops at home).

I always try to have some kind of non-alcoholic liquid on me at all times; on the battlefield that is a disguised Camelback which I tote around on my back, off the battlefield is my glorious copper mug which usually has either water or nettle tea. Previous characters had a leather pouch with a plastic water bottle concealed inside (which I took on the battlefield), and a glorious leather-and-gold covered wine bottle which only ever held water (which would have never gone near the battlefield in a million years).

I must have more stuff than this but right now I can’t think of any scratches head

Plan to have pockets, plan to have bags, but I prefer a couple of medium sized ones to one big one, which I found just ended up swallowing all my stuff and I couldn’t find anything.

In Anvil, I carry somewhere between three and five pouches on my belt -

  • A 10cmx10cm-ish leather one which usually ends up with a handful of OOC coins lurking in the bottom, but also at the moment has a couple of potion lammies
  • A bigger leather pouch that holds a leather-bound notebook, writing implement and various other bits of stuff
  • A fabric drawstring pouch that has rings and/or resources in
  • A scroll case that is full of ship plans
  • A small leather drawstring pouch that holds a bottle of Thule Slave Brain

The first three are pretty much permanent, the fourth occasionally gets left in my tent and the fifth is only there if I want something interesting to talk about. I have a dodgy shoulder, so carrying a bag is mostly off-limits for me if I want to stay pain-free for the weekend, so I burden my hips with the weight instead. I also sometimes carry my dagger with me because why not.

In battle, It’s just the one pouch (roughly the same size as the smaller leather one) for potions and some kind of water-holder, again on my belt. Then, there are the battle bits. Scabbard for my sword, the dagger in its thing and a loop for my axe.

On my belt I have my dagger, three small drawstring pouches - one for ic coin, one for oc coin and one for odds and sods like lip balm. I also hsve a big A5 pouch which I put other ic bits in like resources or whatever. Insude that I have a small drawstring bag for oc stuff like my phone, keys and a head torch. Usually have a tankard clip as well as my tankard. On the battlefield I ditch most of that and just have my dagger and water skin and maybe another short weapon. I also have a shoulder bag with my big notebook and jewellery in it to sell.

I carry an A4 satchel bag with a couple of front compartments and a slightly hidden inner zip pocket. OOC stuff goes in the zip pocket, quick-access stuff or small stuff that would get lost in the main compartment (e.g. mana, potions, some small change, pencils) goes in the front pockets, then the main area has paperwork, notebooks, a knife, a water bottle, some snacks, resources that don’t fit in the front pockets, and anything I’ve just picked up.

Mostly this is because I can’t get pouches on my mage-armour hero belt very easily so everything has to go in the bag.

I personally have an OOC pouch, with phone, car keys, Barbarian money. Then three IC pouches for things I need to get at quickly and easily and a big over the shoulder satchel with water bottle, notebooks and several bags inside for trading goods.

As a trading hint, NEVER keep all your stuff in one bag. There are many reasons for this, from thievery to being able to only show another trader what you need to show them. Knowledge is power when two traders step toe to toe

I can also recommend picking up some of the beautiful IC books that are made by players (Phoenix Reach in Urizen is my personal favourite, other sources are available), as this can give you a huge boost in finding artisan/potion knowledge quickly and easily.

Pouches pouches pouches. I have a dodgy shoulder so it works much better for me than bags.

Have a hero belt with four tankard straps, which hold:

  • Two pouches full of documents, pamphlets and notebooks.
  • One smaller pouch that contains a hip flask and my liao cards, along with pens.
  • A leather water bottle holder that’ll fit a 500ml bottle with a sports cap. Can fill it up at standpipes!

Wooden mug goes on one of the tankard straps, and then two more small pouches go over the front of the belt:

  • One has IC cash. Sometimes it ends up with OC cash in as well because I have no good place to put small change; this isn’t ideal.
  • The other has a bottle of hand sanitiser and a torch, and often OC money as well.

Also on the belt goes a pocket watch, and a scabbard for whichever of dagger or sword I’m carrying, plus the weapon itself.

Then there’s a folder of paperwork.

And then there’s a shoulder bag that is usually full of pamphlets to sell, or assorted extra stuff, and sometimes flowers if it’s E2, and usually also my gloves so I don’t lose them. (Our group doesn’t have a tent, so I don’t have anywhere useful to put stuff IC most of the time!)

If this character went to battle I suspect I’d actually pack lighter for that.

On my belt, dagger scabbard sometimes swapped out for a crafted wand if available, 500ml water bottle in tan bottle holder, OC pouch with medication, bottle opener and hand gel, IC pouch with walk around herbs and their physreps (muslin bags with tea in), and sometimes my camera (as that pouch has the good buckle!), bodkin blunt needle on long red ribbon for use as a healer, tankard strap with tankard, and often my gloves tucked in the belt too.
I have an A5 ish handbag, with song book, ritual book (from phoenix reach) and note book, timepiece, pencils (multiple, they all walk by the end of the event), often snacks, headtorch (also used for reading song words), surgeons tools (dental instruments) in suede roll and purse on neck length chain with mana, IC money in drawstring bag, and OC money in seperate pocket.
Car keys live in my trouser pockets under my dress.
If I am about to do a ritual I also have a long handle basket with bells, hand wash bowl, mana crystal physreps and hand towel.
Basket also occasionally carries extra song books or additional healing kit, with more bandages and fake blood.

Still working out battlefield stuff, but hopefully getting another bag to clip on belt with bandolier for bandages and potion bottles and space for fake blood and so on inside.

Generally? Depends on the system, but my go-to kit is…

Belt

  • sword in hangar
  • dagger in hangar
  • 2-3 pouches (one OOC for car-keys and cash, one or more IC)
  • Throwing knife (phys-rep for so many things) in sheath
  • daughter’s dagger nine times out of ten tucked into belt if she is with me
  • light source (glowstick or lantern) hanging from belt
  • domino mask (habit predates Empire, but since I am in the League now…)

Sash

  • straight dagger (no hilt) hidden in small of back
  • potion bottles wrapped in folds
  • snack wrapped in folds

Shoulder

  • wine bottle holder (1L of Ribena at start, water by end)

Shoulder Bag (if a healer)

  • bandages (50 rolls at last count)
  • leeches
  • logbook / spellbook
  • phone in hidden pocket
  • battery pack in hidden pocket
  • snacks

Lammie Holder around Neck

  • relevant lammies
  • small cards (character sheet if small enough)
  • mana or other consumables

Alrighty

So I’ve picked up a variety of leather pouches, mostly from Darkblade which does all sorts.

1 Large leather pouch containing
1x Large Hardback Moleskin notebook in red (all hail the notebook)
2x backup small moleskin classic journal (for backup and smugly handing to people who don’t have one when it’s needed)
Pens, Small torch, other paperwork and phone normally ends up here too.

1 Small cigarette pack holder pouch - which I use to hold my characters business cards.

1 Slightly larger leather pouch for money (IC and OOC), mana and potion bottles + occasionally magic materials.

1 Leather Pouch with a large cloth looting sack tucked inside and space for other bits and pieces.

1 Dagger on a sheath on the main belt

1 Wand tucked into my hero belt, which is part of my mage armour when I’m wearing the other parts.

I also wander round carrying a very fashionable Rod as well in one hand, as it’s a vital part of the characters movement to carry it now, gives one a certain swagger .

I normally end up carrying the lot around at all times as then I can be ready to go on a jaunt through the Sentinel gate by strapping on some bracers and greaves and grabbing a shield.

Also sometimes on the battlefield I’ll bring a big leather satchel with some thick glass water bottles inside as well.

My previous character preferred the smaller hardback Moleskin notebook as they were small, robust and didn’t add too much weight to my loadout, You can also get flip top journalist style notebooks the same size, which you can flip open in an intimidating fashion (c.f. Hot Fuzz). This one uses a bigger notebook as he’s a bit more of a notes heavy character, but it comes down to what works for you really .

At the moment, a small throwing dagger in sheath and a tankard on leather loop on my belt. Then smallish bag containing notebook and IC pencil, copy of the Anvil Almanac and IC money in main body, hand sanitiser and lavender nose thing (for the loos) in front pocket, and finally phone and OC money in zip pocket at the back.

On a related note, I’d like to be able to carry more and not all in a single bag, but one of the things preventing me is having to muck about with it all when going to the loo. Anyone got any advice on how to get around this or is it just a case of sucking it up as I have been so far?

I have an A4 satchel bag with a specific OOC compartment, normally just money and mobile.

In the bag I carry:
-Medical roll: fabric roll containing medical tools
-Liao: A bottle of liquid Liao Physrep
-Metal cup
-Note pad
-At least two pencils
-Money Bag: containing IC coinage and Liao cards
-Healing wand: Physrep
-A gift thats been awaiting being given a while.
-Knife, fork and spoon camping set
-Bottle opener
-Any Pamphlets I’ve been given or haven’t given out yet

Try wearing a bandolier / sash belt instead of a waist belt for hanging pouches off? It limits the size of pouch you can really use with it, but for keeping a set of small pouches with IC cash, tiny notebook, resources, hand sanitizer, OC money etc etc it should work and stay out of the way in the bog.

WOW Thanks for all the responses, rather fascinating to hear what you guys all carry! Although slightly astounded by the volume of stuff some of you have, I think I should start a rental business renting out trolleys to some of you

That’s a serious amount of kit to carry @signaturefish, I was expecting people to just list a few things like phone, keys, wallet, pen, paper etc but some of you guys have enough kit to sink a battleship! I think if I carried all that being a small frame I’d topple over LOL.

The trick is to spread the weight out around the body, mine is all around a belt, @signaturefish goes the extra mile with backpacks and rigging

grins Yeah. I’ve not the smallest frame, and I’m playing a Navarr logistics expert, so I try to have most of what I need on me most if not all of the time. I certainly wouldn’t expect most characters to be carrying that much extraneous nonsense…

If only you could use a horse!

Oof, wouldn’t waste a noble animal like a horse on this, no pflflflflflflflflf (uh, horse noise). This is a job for MIGHTY OX. And wagon.

Sadly, mighty ox and wagon must remain offstage because I don’t have the transport space for the latter and the former … probably isn’t larpsafe. But yeah, that’s what I carry on my person: the tent has the rest of the wagon’s contents in it

…I bring far too much stuff :stuck_out_tongue:
